Given all my 1960s inclinations I should be saying Brian or go fish. But I love Exile & Sticky Fingers deeply. So I guess Brian was both this creative force & an obstacle for them. Cut loose they could be free without the dead weight - become this mighty Live band & all this. But - the further they got from Brian the less they had to say.

Aftermath and Beggars for me.

Exile is not the greatest songs - but is a great album - & a double. So a different animal. It has atmosphere by the ton - & impacts AltCountry & also a whole aesthetic of raw & disipated but together Rawk. Like Pepper isn't better songs than RubberSoul Revolver but it is a great album. Albums are a thing.

eh. it's not about the sprawl. well maybe a little. def some filler on that; but mostly it's the bland arrangements that bore me. (and a couple of seriously annoying songs, like sweet black angel and just wanna see his face)
too much piano too -watering things down.

No - The Ramones Live were always a particular stimulant. But someone once observed - having seen his much you can take out & still have Rawk - what could they do but see how much you can put back in & still be Ramones? The image is delinquent dummies - but they were so perfectly *Designed* - just the best Pop Art ever...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:20pm
ultradamno:

At least Jazz guys tend not to take a song that's perfectly fine on record stretch it out about three times longer and throw in some cheesy patter then make it a whole side of a double record.

That Grand Funk live album is pretty good. I prefer the "Closer To Home" album.

Avatar 11:25pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Jazz is a different Form in so many ways - much about being able to Blow Live - & when Miles brought in Mixing & Editing like Pop & Rawk have people freaked...
See I love the other Musicians on Exile - kind of like Jazz that way - it's about Music & a feel that way - a little like Electric Lady in parts...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:25pm
chris_in_space:

@ultradamno I'd say there's plenty of sprawl on both Double Nickels and Trout Mask. Both could've made their respective points in single discs, but then they wouldn't be epic, double albums—as they are. There's just no escaping it: you make a double album, you churn redundancy. It's what we want.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:27pm
ultradamno:

Beg to differ. I wouldn't cut a second from either. That said, What Makes A Man Start Fires and Bat Chain Puller are actual favorites by each respectively, so probably have more in common in favoring brevity than not.

Avatar 11:29pm

I feel bad critiquing Double Nickels - but I put it in shuffles & they come up & sometimes don't think they're all that.
