Well, never heard George Strait on WFMU, and I don't own any, but this ain't bad...

As real as it gets, Franco!
@NGH: George Strait has a few incredible records from the '80s. Strait Country is probably my favorite.

same goes for Alan Jackson...

I've been digging into '80s-'90s country ever since reading this brilliant article on '80s country last year: popula.com...
Avatar 10:09pm
northguineahills:

Once a year, from about 2000-2003, there was a 'Browngrass' festival w/ countryesque/bluegrassish bands. I never knew I would move away from that warehouse (Bushwick was sketchy AF back then).
Avatar 10:09pm
northguineahills:

Most of my country ends in the mid-80s except the obvious notable exceptions.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:10pm
Franco Twinkie:

Oh yeah. I might not be over the top about some of the music production, but that's a quibble. The grown up stories about, well you know. That I like.

(move a block away from that warehouse)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:12pm

I wonder how close that warehouse is to my apartment, NGH. Remember the intersection?
Avatar 10:15pm

Montrose/Bushwick. (I lived at Meserole/Bushwick 2010-2016)

(reading the article) I remember when the length of my list of bands musicians I had on my FB would make Tolstoy blush. Now I keep it simple, "all genres, all cultures, all ethnicities, all geographies, and all temporal periods".

That '80s Country article really is excellent. Its about much more tha '80s Country per se. As someone raised on the Pitchfork Media canon, it connected a lot of dots for me.

I think I mentioned I once djed w/ dj Cheb i Sabbah. I recorded his set from the beer cooler at the club so I could get a good muffled echo for sampling. It was all rai't

Oh, if you don't have it already, if still available in the warehouse, in 2011, dj /rupture released 3.5 hr mp3 cd of Maghrebi music, including rai, most of it recent....

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:12pm
wmbogart:

At the risk of relitigating an argument from last week, does the existence of a single 50-55 minute set not imply the possibility of a two-hour two set structure? And could that realization be the cause for all the stalling in the last mic break?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:13pm
Sam Segal:

What an accusation, wmbogart!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:13pm
coelacanth∅:

greetings Sam and stablemates
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:14pm
Sam Segal:

The issue with the two-hour two set structure is that I would have to leave you all without a mic break for the first hour of the show, which just wouldn't be right. Although, I know some fearless DJs like Bryce do that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:14pm
ParUbi:

hey everyone, hi Sam!
🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:15pm
WR:

Does anY of y'all have a system for deciding, nah, time to listen to another stream? I have one I've sorta used even back in the days of radio in the car. Some friends would hit the button right away. This song, feh, and they would cycle through all the presets, even if sometimes they would end up back on the same station.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:16pm
Sam Segal:

Coel! ParUbi! Wonderful to see you both.

Yeah, but Bryce is required to do the legal ID...

You're right, NGH. If that wasn't required, maybe he'd never talk.
🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:19pm
WR:

Unless something comes on that totally bums me, I sorta do baseball. A song I really like is a hit, naturally. Next batter up, 3 strikes and then I'm out. So so songs are a ball.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:20pm
Sam Segal:

You've come to the right horse, Doc!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:20pm
coelacanth∅:

WR i wouldn't call it a system! where there's potential conflict (i like both or all 3 or all 4! shows, in general) i turn on one and if i like the song i stick with it at least for a while.
. . . where there's a 3-hour show and a 1-hour show i often listen to the one-hour show then the balance of the 3. (ie)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:20pm
doctorjazz:

Just Got my swag today, talk about figuring out how to listen to everything...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:22pm
Sam Segal:

WR, in your system, a set might be an inning, which has major implications for how I structure my show...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:23pm
coelacanth∅:

occasionally i bounce back and forth. been doing that a bit on sunday mornings now.
it sucks because there are so many hunks of time that i'm not at all interested in any shows on any wfmu channel; then there are big conflict times.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:24pm
coelacanth∅:

(it sucks because i almost always would like to hear as much of Jeff Golick's show as my waking time has allowed)

wmbogart:

I'm actually very in favor of the mic breaks, and I'd be sorry to see them go! And I appreciate the continuity in the sets and the usage of the mic break to transition to something else completely. Still I'd be remiss to let the categorically untrue claim of a two-set show being "impossible" go unchallenged.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:30pm
doctorjazz:

I like mike breaks, just in generallike to hear from the host, and sometimes in listening in the car or somewhere I can't just pull up the playlist.
🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:33pm
WR:

My preference is mic break within the first 10 minutes of a program, if not during / right after the opening theme. And then every 20 - 30 minutes until the closing.
Avatar 11:34pm
northguineahills:

(I sent my donation in 4.5 weeks ago)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:34pm
coelacanth∅:

some folk's mic breaks are entertaining or cozy; some are annoying! and everything in-between. much more often than not i like them. but
some shows have too many or too long or both.
this one show host who i'm very fond of as a person and fond of his music selections at one time had a 2-hour show and he'd take, usually, 6 mic breaks. he's verbose and repeats himself a lot...and talks about how he'd like to play longer tracks but there's not time with only a 2-hour show!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:34pm
Sam Segal:

I agree on the joys of the mic break. They are what separate WFMU-style freeform radio from, say, the DJ mix format prevalent in the world of Dance music.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:34pm
chresti:

coel, I have the same dilemma, so I listen to both, or back and forth.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:38pm
coelacanth∅:

i am curious why there's discussion about mic breaks. wfmu: freeform. take whatever mic breaks you want!
🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:41pm
WR:

Sam started the mic break discussion by saying he might play music all night with no mic break if he wanted to.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:41pm
Sam Segal:

Despite the fact that I identify as a post-structuralist, I like to give everyone a peak behind the current on my thought process re: set structure, Coel. Getting meta during my mic break got us here!

@coel I'm probably being a little too ironic, but just having fun with the mic break discussion in response to the last break and something from last week. Of course I agree with you! We should all be thankful for freeform radio.

I just came back from a walk in the twilight. It's beautiful outside right now. Fresh, almost chilly.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:48pm

I too am being ironic. Doing a bit of a bit. Pretending I treat my show like a strict science with an exact structure. But of course we all know I'm a freeform freak who doesn't play by anyone's rules, least of all my own!

(@11.41) ah. well Sam if you did a mic break every 20 minutes, every show i probably wouldn't listen to your show! that music-talking ratio is not what i'm here for -regardless of how much i like the show host!
but if you did that now and then it wouldn't phase me in the slightest.
Bryce (since he was mentioned) does minimal mic breaks; but occasionally squeezes an extra one in and it's like a treat! he's very pleasant to listen to! also occasionally he gets on a tangent about an artist or a piece.
but usually he's minimal.
