Dean:

I'm noticing that WFMU is lately paying a bit more attention to Genesis, all for the better.
  10:58pm
Dean:

I have a ton of Genesis outtakes, bootlegs, etc., thanks to a buddy who is deeply connected to the library of, er, not legitimate recordings.
Avatar 🦇 11:03pm
Julie:

Dean that's wonderful.
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 11:04pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

My impression of early Genesis so far has been of like a King Crimson before puberty - not as a knock as much as it sounds...
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 11:05pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Kinks I don't know! Joy.
  11:05pm
Dean:

I hear you, Rev, but my sense is the converse: Genesis is the matured KC.

On reflection, I have no idea what that means.
Avatar 🦇 11:06pm

hmm I guess I need to check out some Crimson

HAHA. Maybe stick to the video collabs with Toyah huh?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:09pm
WR:

It is not to say that there are not some interesting King Crimson recordings but life is short.
  11:10pm
Daya:

I loved the ‘Discipline’ era version of Crimson, saw them many times during those years.
“The Sheltering Sky” might fit nicely into your show, imo :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:11pm
WR:

And hey. I generally prefer dark beer so what do I know.
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 11:12pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Haha Dean.
Well - the Crimson one has a sardonic aspect - & Genesis speak of forming in public school
...then there's Van der Graff Generator but I digress...
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 11:13pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Guinness.
Avatar 🦇 11:13pm
Julie:

I feel like I've played them a couple times but not in ages
  11:13pm
Daya:

Van Der Graf... are we going to segue into Magma and Popul Vuh now? ;)
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 11:15pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Not sure about that but I can imagine some Venn Van Julie intersection...

Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 11:16pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Oh who knows how to spell any if that.
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 11:16pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

*of :)
  11:16pm
Dean:

My approach to Crimson is in terms of vague notions like "musicality" and "virtuosity." On balance, I think Genesis "wins" for the early work. Fripp seemed to dispense ideas, where Genesis delivered songs. Fripp did some masterful finger work, but then so did Tony Banks, without all the hoopla. I have tried hard for decades to appreciate VdGG... I really want to dig them, but I don't...so far. I suspect I will come around shortly.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:17pm
WR:

I had stopped paying attention to them after hearing their 3rd album. Dipped into a couple id the later ones but will give Discipline a listen. Their 1st album ¹was a dorm favorite for my one semester of regular college.
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 11:18pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Start with KC debut - great dynamics.
Avatar 🦇 11:19pm
Julie:

I actually have a King Crimson concert ticket on my fridge that I had got for a friend (for cancelled concert in June I think?)
  11:20pm
Daya:

IMO, ‘Discipline’ is the best of the lot during that time. It always has my 100% attention. ‘Beat’ also has some wonderful moments.
  11:20pm
Dean:

I had all the early KC records before I sold them ~25 years ago. I know them more or less well.

The Belew period? No, can't stomach it.
Avatar 🦇 11:22pm
Julie:

every time you say KC I think sunshine band
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 11:22pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Well yes, Prog's typical formal liabilities - & every genre has theirs - are virtuosic technique & big concepts over useful tuneage or relatable expression...I guess I regard KC & VdGG as gnarly enuff.
  11:23pm
Daya:

It was fun watching the ‘out on a limb antics’ of Belew and Levin, contrasting with the technician aspects of Fripp and Bruford, that was a treat for me.
I did see Belew solo, and with The Bears not long after, always a bouncy guy on stage ;)
Avatar 🦇 11:24pm
Julie:

did Belew do stuff with Bowie? I feel like i heard his name a lot from my Bowie fan ex

Avatar 🦇 11:25pm

  11:26pm

I know Belew worked with the Talking Heads, and I think he did work on Bowie’s “The Lodger”, maybe?
  11:26pm
Dean:

Oh, heck yes, he did, late '70s.
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 11:26pm

  11:28pm
Dean:

I simply don't like Belew's work. Doesn't matter much whom he partnered with.
  11:29pm

Belew loved doing all sorts of stuff, neck bending, feedback techniques, animal noises, etc...

I myself have been responsible for derailing discussions of, inter alia, progressive rock debates on the comment boars. I really do not want to effect the same result just now. I'm fine with disagreement about Belew or Crimson or whomever. I only claim my unfettered right to be a sourpuss!

Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 11:37pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

No if he did PiL I think we'd all be sure. Lydon probably liked the perversity of working with Vai & Ginger Baker... Belew probably too close to Heads & Bowie for Johnny...
  11:38pm
Dean:

I saw PiL, first tour, Olympic Auditorium in LA. Openers included Los Lobos and the sublime Kipper Kids. Cred?
