Charles Mingus said jazz was a word invented to separate musicians from their money. Music for a Free World brings us together, drawing listeners to the healing power of smooth free jazz. Each week, surprise guests bring their own sides to spin and their instruments of choice to spontaneously jam.

Hi there, beautiful people. I got my hair cut this past week, @doc. Don’t think I lost any powers, other than the ability to draw stares for my hair’s verticality.

Frank, your description of sacred harp singing triggered me to read about again, interesting perspective for points of departure for improvising.

OK, seem to have survived the haircut pretty intact. They aren't trimming beards (which I had decided I didn't want to let them do anyway, would have to take the mask off). Maybe I'll just try to grow my beard like Dave's (wonder how long that would take...)

I read reviews of albums i haven't heard just to alert me to records/artists I don't know about. It's just impossible to purchase everything that comes out to check out for yourself (Lord knows I've tried). It's even hard to know WHO to check out, what new artists have hit the scene, etc. FMU has definitely become a big part of exposing me to stuff I pick up, though. Thomas Conrad (writes for Stereophile and other places), for instance, has written reviews that have alerted me to European jazz artists I may never have come across (and, I've found that I generally like what he likes).
(Downtown Music Gallery's email includes reviews of new arrivals).

Hey WR!
The Joanna Mattrey tune was off her latest release from Relative pitch, i love how she channels Henry Flynt vibes and uses a Stroh, which is a vintage derivation of a violin with a metal horn that comes out of the resonating body!
  4:59pm

The JBL is also from a Relative Pitch title, amazing band! Luke Stewart is one of the best bassists in the game!
