F/Queens: yes, all those early Sayles movies are great. Can't speak of the later ones, don't think I've seen any since "Lone Star." And Secaucus 7 was no doubt the "inspiration" for "The Big Chill" (that's too bad it's not available). Hughie C: that summer I think Fleetwood Mac, Zeppelin, Pink Floyd & ELP all played the Garden. When I saw ELP then, Alison Steele came out to say "Keith, Carl & Greg wanted me to talk to you about the firecrackers"----apparently it had been a big problem all summer. She told us to cool it, & despite that, I think one (maybe a small one) went off while Greg Lake was singing, and he stopped the song to say it was dangerous & you're stupid for doing it (or words to that effect). I also heard the reason P. Floyd did the "Wall" shows at Nassau Coliseum instead of MSG was because they were annoyed by all the firecrackers the last time they played there.

Thanks DG, interesting historical perspective. That era was just crazy. The night before the Zep show I saw,Dave Marsh, writing in Newsday, said Zeppelin’s entrance was greeted by “an assault of fireworks that made the Garden seem like Da Nang.” On the final night, an explosive blew up and injured Jimmy P's hand.

@DG, I think it's just that this kind of dangerous thing was nevertheless tolerated -- until it wasn't. People bought tickets to see their favorite band, rolled up a ton of joints and stocked up on fireworks. Crazy!

Fantastic book about the dark side of the surfing ethos: "Tapping the Source" by Kem Nunn.

?:

Billboard magazine, May 25, 1963, on *Shean* and Jenkins' 45: "Two very funny sides that could attract play and sales. First up is a clever take-off on radio and TV commercials, with a nutty, jazz-oriented backing. Flip is somewhat on the surf kick with a sort of beatnik poetry narrative. Funny material, well carried off."

I heard that "Kicks" was written as a sort of warning to fellow songwriter Gerry Goffin, who had his own problems with various substances. And I wouldn't write off PR & the Raiders---their greatest hits album rocks, & sounds like they may have inspired the Attractions, among others.
