removing statues removes awareness of history. that's all. just my opinion also.
  11:35am
Martinibomb:

I definitely thinking getting rid of *some* statues is called for. All the southern civil war heroes should just go. Put them in a museum w/context if people really want to save em.
  11:37am
Martinibomb:

I certainly think all the clearly racists statues they erected during the civil rights movement should be gone for sure since those were put up in retaliation to civil rights
  11:37am
Martinibomb:

Someone might be able to make an argument for the ones they put up early after the war.. but the ones put up in the 40s/50s/60s should go
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:38am
Listener Bob in PGH:

I completely agree with you MB!
Avatar 11:39am
Ursula1000:

exactly MB---relocate them. People don't need to be driving past these relics reminding them of oppressive times.
  11:39am
Martinibomb:

Why are there no statues of Hitler around? I'd follow that example - as far as what we do with folks like that.
Avatar 11:40am

good morning/evening, Jan and everyone!
  11:41am
Martinibomb:

^hah Yeh I kinda figured you had that more in mind sorry to hijack @Jan :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:41am
joe:

Unfortunately most statues that are being discussed are not erected to point out the bad or misfortune acts that someone committed they are erected as a manner of celebration. To continue to have the present states that are for which they are erected still feels that the subject should still be seen in a favorable light. I do agree to get rid of them is and attempt to whit wash history (no pun) and they shoudl be put somewhere to point out that unfortunate history has happened and that a second unfortunate thing has happened in that a large group felt it was ok to honor this.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:41am
Jan Turkenburg:

Hi Spodiodi
  11:42am
Martinibomb:

@joe exactly put them somewhere for discussion but they are not to be celebrated

Hey, I know that in German – "Das kann doch einen Seemann nicht erschüttern ..." Love it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:43am
Jan Turkenburg:

In some Dutch towns, they are planning on moving certain statues to musea.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:44am
Jan Turkenburg:

Yes, Zivilar, we were very good in stealing German and English songs!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:44am
joe:

As someone who especially in my youth cared more about what ever the powers that be didn't want me to see we certainly do not want to hide them. But we also don't want to give the impression that the collective we are ok with celebrating the actions of someone that should not be celebrated.
Avatar 11:45am

here's the thing: where do we draw the line on 'disappearing' genocidal colonialists? this isn't being determined, but most every statesman or industrialist or military commander has blood on their hands. are they all coming down?
Avatar 11:49am
Linda Lee:

@Jan: Looks awesome. I only own one shellack recording and am afraid my pockets wouldn't be nearly deep enough for this additional collection hobby, but having a shellack player and shellacks must be so awesome ... Saw a documentary about Robert Crumb and his shellack collection, really impressive ...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:53am
joe:

@linda lee your point is well taken. But I think when it comes to the statues honoring the confederacy there is a pretty clear line. Forgoing the obvious reasons for the issue can anyone else tell me of a situation where there a state mandated honor is paid to a losing army?
Avatar 11:53am
zivilars:

Does the shellac needle really destroy those records very quickly after a few listenings? Or do you use softer needles for that?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:55am
Jan Turkenburg:

@Zivilars, it's more the other way round. I have to change needles after 5 or 6 records, but there is a big variety in needles. I just became memebre of a dutch society of shellac lovers and hope to learn more soon.
  Swag For Life Member 11:55am
WR:

Good points Joe. History shouldn't be erased but no celebration of despicable actions. Flags and street names should represent what we try to be as a people of today. Taking down every statue of every president before Roosevelt except Lincoln misses needed opportunity for education regarding misdeeds of the past. The scar and wound of slavery in the development of the USA and Europe needs to be fully acknowledged. Sorry for the rant, particularly here.
