This is how I'm celebrating Canada Day. Toronto's very multi-cultural, with people from everywhere, so this seems appropriate. The Canadian accent, incidentally, is as much a mythical stereotype as a uniform American accent, as anyone in the 5 boroughs, for instance, knows. My own accent is pretty much precisely yours, Gary. I was working briefly with some folks at the Chicago Tribune years ago, and they were giving me the 'oot and abooot' thing, and I had to politely oblige the fact that they were in fact serious.

@melinda: Yeah, I've heard that a lot...bin for been. The language varies so much wherever you go...from Seattle to NOLA, Appalachia to Newark to Memphis to Atlanta....the Johns Islands off of the Carolinas have a really old form of English, an actual dialect...Canada's like that too...

Allow me to interject a contrary opinion or two re: cultural linguistic stereotypes. In fact, all Americans do talk alike. We swallow our Rs, and while I don't sound like my friends from the Midwest or the South, you would know in an instant that I'm from the USA as soon as I utter a sentence.

Second, if stereotypes about accent are bullshit, then so are "travel dissolves barriers" platitudes. It does not. It's mostly well-off people pretending they're exercising their empathy or expanding their horizons or keeping an open mind. It's students who have graduated from college feeling obligated to "see the world," when the world is right out their front door.

Travel is costly, effortful, harmful (carbon footprint?), deceptive work. We need to stop travelling and start reading.

I asked about 'been' because that's one of the few features I've noticed consistently in Canadian accents that you don't hear in the States.

I will have to respectfully disagree with you re. the language uniformity notion Dean. It's likely that I will know in a short time that you're American, and also where in America you're from. The modes of common speech are demonstrably diverse. By stereotypes, I refer to an odd insistence, for example, that Canadians speak as Scots, or conversely that Americans speak like hillbilly crackers. And narrow-eyed cynicism about the mere possibility of feeling genuine kinship with people we don't initially recognize leads to things like Red states and Blue states wanting to murder each other. It's unproductive. It ends in death camps. I do see your very valid point about recreational travel, however.

Of course, SOFp. There are stereotypes and stereotypes.

But what do you mean when you say some folks "don't initially recognize" people? "Recognize"?

I suspect the Red/Blue divide is choreographed by our fearless leaders, whom I loathe. People generally are prejudiced, even hateful and territorial, and yet we don't want to be perceived as such. We have Red and Blue divisiveness not because ordinary jerk-offs like me don't recognize ordinary jerk-offs from some other territory. We have it because, in our case, American (more or less by now global) leadership thrives on assuring us we won't be harmed by *them.*

Some people here say 'bin' also, as rapid speech is elided. Nobody but out-ot-towners say Toe-Ron-Toe, for Toronto either. It's generally something more like Tahrahnah. Go figure.

Dean. please, I'm merely talking about the sounds of language. I have no intention of engaging your obviously heated polemic. Times are very hard right now. Tempers are hot, and fear, desperation, and frustration are rampant. Wariness is becoming indistinguishable from paranoia. Hate and suspicion are being ramped up. If you want troll the crap out of me to blow off some steam...well, I don't know what to say. And Gary, I am very sorry that the tone in the chat on your show has gone down this hole. The best thing I can do for the sake of your show at this moment is to disappear. It's going to be a very long summer. I'm not a jerk-off. Not nearly. Have a good evening everyone.
