Bye Ignatatus666! Hello The Man ION!

I think this issue of “politics” on WFMU has been misinterpreted overt the years by many. I said something about WFMU barring political discussion on Joe McGasko’s show this past week and got this response from DJ Michael Shelley:

“Jake - agree 100%, things are sickening - but to clarify: except for FCC type rules, there are no rules for WFMU dj about what they may or may not say. No guidelines. The entire topic has never once been discussed as log as I've been on air. DJs are free talk about any subject.”

www.wfmu.org...

The reality is there is no ban on politics, but rather nobody wants to start fights and avoiding politics in normal times is a decent way to avoid issues.

To be on the air in this region — New York and New Jersey — and just play music devoid of acknowledging what is happening right now is kinda crazy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:18am
chresti:

Thanks rich, sometimes you just have to say something that can't not be said.
  1:20am
JakeGould:

Also, it is quite incredulous to me that now — after pretty much a full week of DJs hosting shows that clearly acknowledge the reality outside our windows — that somehow now Rich has crossed some “holy” line of what can and cannot be played.

The damned homepage of the WFMU website even makes a statement right here: wfmu.org...

Anyway, now back to bed. Keep it keeping it Rich!

That's good, Jake. The fact that there can be spontaneous commentary is significant and part of FMU's mission, right?
  1:33am
JakeGould:

@ParUbi: I don’t speak for WFMU but the station is not a community radio station as most people mistake it to be. It is a freeform station with a focus on music and no dictated playlists. Sone shows are clearly not just music and experiment with audio and performance. If this were a community station it would probably be unlistenable with talk shows filled with convoluted fringe ideas.
  1:33am
The Man ION:

I agree with saying anything on the air. It’s a free country and I value the freedom to express viewpoints. AND I totally value freeform radio. Just finished work and tuned in to chill out, that’s all. Peace.

  1:37am
JakeGould:

@ParUbi: What’s happening now in the U.S. is extraordinary and too big to ignore. A massively cruel President, Coronavirus, decimated economy, record unemployment and then these BLM protests triggered by the murder of George Floyd. Not acknowledging as any of this would be insane.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:38am
coelacanth∅:

yeah i sure don't want to hear about it the majority of the time
but i do appreciate hearing different people's articulation of what they're feeling and thinking, and that they need to get it out.
  1:41am
ignatatus666:

Unfortunately that guy that constantly posts links has a personal issue and likes to antagonize. We come for the music all the music. The chats are cool especially when he’s not on here posting links. The DJs for the most part use the music as their form of expression. Especially when they do dedicated themes.
Rich the music you play is always superb. Thank you.
Not every listener has the same ideology.
  1:43am
rich:

agreed, that's how you find common ground
  1:47am
JakeGould:

Bye Ignatatus666! Why you still here?
.
What you are hearing on the air now — and all week so far — is fully approved by the majority of DJs, staff and Station Manager Ken himself. In fact the one massive “rule” I know of at WFMU is not to tell DJs what they can play or say.
.
This station is freeform. Not an in demand escapism service. And my issues with you are clear as day here as with elsewhere.

Diezel Tea welcome back Brother.
Me.Ion thank you. I won’t debate with anyone. Politics are ugly. Unfortunately many on the chats believe everyone on the WoofMoo feel the same and if they don’t they don’t belong here. Kind of hypocritical to the premise? So I don’t get involved. I caught quite a few people that are hardcore into freedom of speech etc. on here that actually were not at all.So let the music flow.
