Hey Doc!

Charlie:

<3 this Farinas song so much!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:02pm
Jeff Golick:

Nice!

Funky16Corners:

Hi Charlie! Jeff!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:06pm
Funky16Corners:

Ya think maybe Jimmy Page was thinking of this song when he wrote 'Over the Hills and Far Away'?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:11pm
Charlie:

Ha! Never thought of that before, but, yeah, wouldn't be surprised...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:12pm
Funky16Corners:

It's not just the melody, it's the textural changes as well.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:12pm
Charlie:

"Why have the breezes of summer, dear, been laced with a grim design?" -- one of my fave lines ever.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:29pm
Funky16Corners:

I love this first Genesis album.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:31pm
Charlie:

I am sadly remiss in not knowing this album. I see I will have to rectify that situation!
Avatar 7:32pm
Photocopy Cha Cha:

Hey there! Good tunes so far. I wonder why this is supposed to be the worst Genesis album (at least Gabriel era) - never heard this as an entity, but the weekly Genesis fix at Dark Night Of The Soul often includes a tune from it.
Avatar 7:33pm
zivilars:

Hi everybody, hi Larry! Have to go to bed soon, but joining a few minutes one of my favourite shows. My time zone doesn't mean well for me when it comes to Testify, but luckily, there's the WFMU archives ... Have a great day all you out there, thanks for the show!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:33pm
Funky16Corners:

I think people that are into the seriously PROG Genesis stuff see it as too conventionally pop. The songs and production are fantastic but it is definitely straight on 1968/69 popsike
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:34pm
Funky16Corners:

Also, Hello Photocopy and Zivilars!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:46pm
Funky16Corners:

So eerie....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:49pm
Charlie:

well that's timely (I wonder who it will be tomorrw, you or me?)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:50pm
Funky16Corners:

Yeah, I think Arthur was seeing into the future with that one.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:50pm
Charlie:

I've been expecting Dan Hicks...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:51pm
Funky16Corners:

Well that's a happy coincidence!
Avatar 7:51pm
Photocopy Cha Cha:

I guess the 2003 LOVE forever changes gig (with stockholm strings & horns) is probably my favourite live experience ever.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:52pm
Funky16Corners:

The album they put out of that tour is unbelievably good. It's almost like Arthur knew the end was near,
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:53pm
Funky16Corners:

I saw Arthur at Maxwells when he was being backed by the guys from Das Damen, before he went to prison.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:54pm
Funky16Corners:

It was spare, but still such an honor to see him sing and play in person
Avatar 8:01pm
Photocopy Cha Cha:

They also put out an ep called Love On Earth Must Be around 2004. It is pretty difficult to get hold of, and probably the whole pressing had defects. I have never heard a listenable one either (once found a rip somewhere) so can't really comment whether the new songs were good or not. They played a few the second and also last time I saw them with Arthur Lee in 2004 in London (In 2005 they were supposed to perform in London on the 7. of July 2005, but there was the transport terror attacks, they postponed the gig by a week and Arthur Lee did not show up. Johnny Echols was there though.)

Hi Larry & drummer streamers, listening but busy at work so not commenting.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:09pm
Funky16Corners:

Hey WR!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:10pm
Funky16Corners:

@Photocopy - I think Johnny Echols still performs as Love now and again
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:13pm
Funky16Corners:

Released in 1966, but originally recorded in 1960
Avatar 8:21pm
Photocopy Cha Cha:

@8:10 Funky16Corners: I had forgotten about he did this as Love Band, but did not know he still does it, just googled and yes, now it is called Love Revisited, and same line-up as before, i.e. members of Baby Lemonade (like it was the three times I saw LOVE with and also once without Arthur Lee)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:22pm
Funky16Corners:

I think it's cool that he's still around to play, but Love without Arthur or Bryan MacLean isn't Love (to me, anyway)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:26pm
Funky16Corners:

I think that the folks who put together the tour for Arthur, with the strings and everything were doing something special, for Arthur first and foremost, but for us all as well. You can hear it in his voice, that this was the realization of a lifelong dream.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:28pm
doctorjazz:

Love this Ornette, just beautiful!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:28pm
Funky16Corners:

Yeah, this stuff, the first few Quartet LPs are just amazing
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:28pm
Charlie:

agreed. Ornette.
Avatar 8:30pm
Photocopy Cha Cha:

@8:26 Funky16Corners: I have never heard the recordings, but the two gigs - 2003 & 2004 - were pretty magical. The 2005 one with Johnny Echols was surprisingly good but no Arthur, no LOVE.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:30pm
Funky16Corners:

I remember when I first clicked with Ornette, it was like having my ears rewired. What seemed like chaos before came into focus, and blew my mind.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:32pm
doctorjazz:

Got assigned grilling for dinner, missed some of the set, great stuff, will have to come back to it
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:33pm
Funky16Corners:

It will live in the archive!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:35pm
doctorjazz:

Glad I got to see Dan Hicks, fun show he put on.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:35pm
Funky16Corners:

Sadly I never got to see him live.
  8:36pm
Dean:

First time I heard Ornette, it clicked without a hitch. ABBA, on the other hand: I still don't get them.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:36pm
doctorjazz:

Ramblin' and Lonely Women were the 1st Ornette tunes I ever heard (on The Smithsonian Collection of Classic Jazz.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:37pm
Funky16Corners:

Hey Dean!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:38pm
Funky16Corners:

This is actually the first Ornette tune I ever heard. I bought this album when I was in high school because it looked cool.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:38pm
Funky16Corners:

Roy Ayers, BTW on both of the Jack Wilson tracks
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:38pm
doctorjazz:

You could play Dancing Queen a hundred times in a row, I'd never you're of it (haven't listened to anything else by then, though).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:39pm
doctorjazz:

(...never tire, that should say...)
  8:41pm
Dean:

My sense is that they do bad pop, but in a way the badness of which is enjoyable. I simply haven't found that way. (Trust me, I love a lot of bad pop groups.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:45pm
Funky16Corners:

It's Abba's world. We just live in it, driving around them (most of the time, anyway, I like a few of their songs a lot) and continuing on our way to more substantial/nutritious things.
Avatar 8:47pm
Bri The Beatnik:

This sounds like if Velvet Underground did Jazz
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:49pm
Funky16Corners:

Hey Bri! This (and the track I'll play after it) are very much in that vein. At other times Sidran sounds like he's trying to be a cross between Mose Allison and Bob Dorough. I prefer his more instrumentally inclined stuff.
Avatar 8:50pm
Bri The Beatnik:

Interesting!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:51pm
Funky16Corners:

BTW the drums on both of these tracks are played by Clyde Stubblefield, from James Brown's band
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:56pm
doctorjazz:

Quitting time? Thanks, Larry!
Avatar 8:56pm
Bri The Beatnik:

Cool!
🥁 Swag For Life Member 8:57pm
WR:

Great show Larry. Helped keep me in a groove as I work. Laters all.
Avatar 8:58pm
Photocopy Cha Cha:

ABBA is NOT bad pop - you can enjoy it in a completely unironic way.

But hey, thanks Larry!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:01pm
Funky16Corners:

Thanks for listening, all!
