Tony Coulter:

FYI: Today's playlist art is a painting by Emma Amos. It's from 1966, and is titled "Baby."
  9:52am
Dean:

Amos died on May 21. Complications from Alzheimer's.

Tony- I'm not lurking really, but I'm busy doing chores round the house, so coming back into my room occasionally to look at the screen.
Avatar 12:30pm
Tony Coulter:

I'm no one to judge -- I've been known to grab a coffee or snack during a long track.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:31pm
spodiodi:

snacks can be difficult to resist
🥁 Swag For Life Member 12:33pm
WR:

Snacking here boss. Break or lunch time is only time i can pop in the playlist during weekdays.
Avatar 12:35pm
Tony Coulter:

Heya, WR! Be sure not to spill anything sticky onto your keyboard....
  12:35pm
Dean:

Richard Meltzer wrote a poem about what he did as a DJ at LA's KPFK when a long track was playing.
Avatar 12:37pm
Tony Coulter:

An FMU DJ from years ago (won't name him) used to buy and sell stocks during long tracks....
  12:43pm
Dean:

Ah, Blackwood! Been a while since I've listened to his stuff. This is Jr., right?
Avatar 12:44pm
Tony Coulter:

Yep, Jr. -- not that I know who Sr. was....
Avatar 12:51pm
TDK60:

Tony, has the rainy season faded there yet?
Avatar 12:52pm
Tony Coulter:

Pretty much, yes -- though the hot weather hasn't really arrived yet (which is fine by me).
  12:52pm
Dean:

Evidently a big-shot bridge player.
Avatar 12:54pm
Tony Coulter:

Sr., you mean? Ha!
  12:57pm
Dean:

Yep.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:04pm
Listener Bob in PGH:

I slipped away for lunch. That way I don't spill anything sticky on my keyboard.
Avatar 1:13pm
Tony Coulter:

Sounds wise -- you don't want to end up stuck to your keyboard.
🥁 Swag For Life Member 1:15pm
WR:

@listener james fW, thank you for mentioning India Amos twit thread about her mother. Lovely and moving "portrait" of a person, family, artist.
Avatar 1:18pm

I plan to take a look at that post show -- tho I'm not on twitter ... so maybe I won't be able to?
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 1:20pm
Yvang:

Oh the Ondes Martenot (which I always mix up in my mind with Theremin)
Avatar 1:21pm
Tony Coulter:

The Ondes Martenot has a keyboard -- so it's not as spooky to see it played -- but just as spooky to hear.
Avatar 1:22pm
TDK60:

The Ondes Martenot was used in the soundtrack for Lawrence of Arabia, along with trad. symphony orch.
Avatar 1:24pm
Tony Coulter:

Messiaen used it a lot....
Avatar 1:26pm
still b/p:

Backwards, it's a "Tone Tram"...which kinda works.
Avatar 1:27pm
Tony Coulter:

Ha! That does work! (Heya, still b/p!)
  1:27pm
Dean:

Been thinking a lot lately of the Quartet for the End of Time. Why would that be?
Avatar 1:30pm
Tony Coulter:

I wouldn't mind if time ended -- not the world, just time.
  1:31pm
Dean:

I wonder if when Messiaen was in elementary school he wrote a Quartet for the End of Recess?
Avatar 1:32pm
TDK60:

Dean, it probably means your alarm clock is going to go kaput.
Avatar 1:35pm

Avatar 1:37pm

Heya, NGH! That Boucher piece is the only thing I've ever heard by him. Very little of his music seems to have been recorded....
Avatar 1:40pm
Tony Coulter:

Music for piano and cough
Avatar 1:41pm
Tony Coulter:

(The Budd, I mean)
  1:43pm
Dean:

Sviatoslav Richter's famous concert performance recording of Mussourgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition in Sofia, Bulgaria, in winter of 1958 is punctuated with lots of coughing.
Avatar 1:46pm
Tony Coulter:

Well, I guess it easy to fall sick during a Bulgarian winter....
Avatar 1:49pm
Tony Coulter:

Hugh Davies is without a doubt a master springist....
  1:51pm
Dean:

Spring as in season? Or device that makes a clock tick? When I saw SPK live, they "played" a garage door spring fitted with a contact mic. They smashed beer bottles against the spring and toward the audience. For all I know, the show took place in spring, too.
  1:52pm
Dean:

Yep, 'twas spring, April of '82: https://www.discogs.com/SPK-From-Science-To-Ritual/release/1660881
