Sun. Dec 22nd, 3pm - 5pm:
The Unsolicited Return of the Winter Soul-stice (fill-in for Paul Bruno)
(More info...)
You can't stop the seasons from turning, and you evidently also can't stop an old dog from performing his one old trick. Answering the teeming clamor of one New York Times food columnist
, Gaylord Fields is returning to WFMU's airwaves for a one-off Winter Soul-stice program. In his time away he's learned nothing, so the format will remain the same: two hours of original 1960s soul 45s, and the abuse of an expensive reverb machine for the sake of corny vocal effects.
Shout out to Ruth and Scott, and all the rest of the skeleton crew for all they do! Scott, thanks for making this show fly across the air and up in space and through wires.
So I'm watching this Britcom called "Scarborough" and it has a pretty '80s soundtrack that's rather cool. They'll do things like underscore a big scene with a big song, then cut to another scene and the same song will be coming out of someone's radio. The episode I watched tonight featured in one scene, at asmr level, a song that started nagging at me. It was at like 1/10th the level of the dialoge. Is that...yes, that's the Kinks song, "Days". Who's that singing...man, that's a familiar voice. Did Kirsty MacColl record "Days"? Why yes, she did.
What a surprise to hear our song coming out of the speakers! I’m on FaceTime with my mom and she got to hear it with us, haha! Loving all the selections. great vibes as always!
Hi Joe! Yes so far so good. Justin’s still been going into work and I’ve been working from home super busy and going crazy, but we both feel very thankful to have work and our health. Hope you are well too! Miss you and everyone!
wonder if any group had more hits with more lead singers than the Spinners. I guess the Drifters are the only other contender I can think of. I guess the Beatles with 4 are in the running.
thought of the Temptations but would you count Richard Street as singing lead, sharing it with everyone else? Not sure how to count them. Beach Boys, duh, forgot that do you wanna dance was a hit single
Yeah what I figured, Gaylord. The Five Stairsteps?

@joe B Justin got shut down trying to place the weekly order with Gino’s last Sunday!! Glad to know they’re back in business

Looking up that cool Teo Usuellli track, and the movie it's from: Alla Ricerca del Piacere. 3 of the greatest words in the English language--con Farley Granger!
I just discovered the discussion topic thanks to Joe B’s post @8:30pm: “wonder if any group had more hits with more lead singers than the Spinners. I guess the Drifters are the only other contender I can think of. I guess the Beatles with 4 are in the running.”
Hi Gaylord... came back inside to get a beer my younger aunt came over on her bicycle we are distancing in the front yard... haven't talked to her personally in over a month.. we got your music blasting on the stereo though and it sounds good!!!

Just catching up. The Association-intel-chat is pretty damn wonderful.
Drifters: Clyde McPhatter, Bill Pinkney, Ben E. King, Rudy Lewis, Charlie Thomas — am I missing anyone? I think David Baughan appeared on some b-sides.
Hello wonderful Gaylord! It's so funny; I was just reading about the Dadaists and "Blue Poppy" sounds very Dadaesque. I'm also enjoying some gouda cheese. I have a Dutch friend who is always annoyed when I mispronounce it. Doues gouda get a capital G?
9:19pm
Giana:
@Ira: Thank you! Why do you have to know trig to post a comment on this here board? Three digits? C'MON
@Dean: Joe came up with the game, asking about hits. So I guess if it's a tie for singers, then the number of songs would be the decider. I believe the winner by Joe's rules is the Drifters.
Ok...I'm done... now I'm here to dedicate 100% of my time to the rest of your playlist!!!

wendy del formaggio:
I always pronounce gouda w a hard g because even though it’s incorrect I like it better that way.
Regarding whether to capitalize the g, I’ve seen it both ways. I know I’m not being very helpful, but that’s what I got.
@ Giana, Gaylord. yep i HOW da, is how my friend used to correct me. She also often offered me black licorice -- really the only candy product I strongly dislike. @ Wendy thanx for your cheez wizdom :)
This is WFMU music calculus right here ladies and gentleman. *insert GIF of befuddled Winona Ryder with all kinds of equations floating around her head*
to recap - I asked this after the Spinners were played early in the show, since they had hits with 5 different lead singers, if any group had hits with more lead singers?

Believe it or not, I listened to this Susumu Yokota album this morning! My 2 year old picked it out!

loved the mort garson...also love his plantasia release among others... "in the midst of chaos, there is also oppurtunity"...Gaylord...Thank You and always "Take
Care"...
Clarity! Because Joe B. asked, "wonder if any group had more hits with more lead singers than the Spinners," I focused on both hits and singers. Obvs, you can't have fewer hits with more singers, but you can have more hits with fewer singers, which complicates matters. But you asked "if any group had hits with more lead singers," which controls for the number of hits.
so I guess Drifters and Beach Boys tied. Not sure what the final ruling on the Association was. And the Temptations could be counted as the winners if the partial leads or Richard Street, Damon Harris and Otis Williams are counted.
@Joe B...so the hits had to be with the band...and with different singers, but only with the band? The Eagles is still up there, but I was thinking outside of the band too, but that seems like less of a challenge now, so I'm thinking that's not what you meant. I was barking up the wrong tree, me thinks! Same band...different singers, right?
(I feel like we're watching a live allegory of politics in action here. Folks debating the rules occupy far more intellectual horsepower than the substance at issue.)

CC:
good vocalists are a dime a dozen..!.. if they write their own music that's a plus..!.you just got to have a good band to back them up!!!
well if the temptations count, wu-tang would have to count
9:55pm
Dean:
(I also feel like we're bumping into a topic that long ago occupied a comment board, namely, bands that have drifted so far from their original personnel that they invoke the Sorites paradox.)
9:56pm
Dean:
"well if the temptations count, wu-tang would have to count"
