Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:22pm
    Rob W:

Yes - like a lot of places, soldiers played brass while in the military and brought the instruments back home with them. But while bands then sprung up to provide music for festivals in Peru in some villages (I'm not exactly sure of the regional breakdown of where that was most common), brass bands did not become a part of popular music there the way they did in say, Mexico or Serbia.

yes, i used to be *sorta* fluent in Spanish, but have lost a lot of that . . . so being cooped up in the house may be a good time to try to teach myself! that and other languages too :)
may be some sort of Pisco that Mayordomo is drinking? hard to see the labels on the bottles in the video

@mariano (7:58): This is not your academy.

@chresti: I made "enfriojaldas": sauteed veggies and spices and some spicy fake sausage. Dipped tortillas in refried beans and water. Add a little cheese and the veggie mixture to each. Pour the rest of the beans over the top. Bake. Top with a little cotija cheese.

@ chresti -- when i moved to Hoboken (1981) just about every other person spoke Spanish -- i was so thrilled!

When I was in college in Ann Arbor MI Handy and Mariano, one of the bands that regularly played the local bars was called Non-Fiction, featuring Ben and Larry Miller - the brothers of Mission of Burma guitarist Roger Miller. They were a pretty cheesy new wavey band as I recall...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:23pm
    Handy Haversack:

    Heh, Rob!

What bars would they play? I got my MFA in Ann Arbor, though later than when you were there -- but it seemed like a lot of places had been there a while!

Hi Handy Haversack: Joe's Star Lounge, formerly the Star Bar, which is long gone I think; also Rick's American Cafe, The Blind Pig, and the Second Chance, which was the mid-sized venue in town (where say Siouxsie and the Banshees played). I think they opened for some bands along those lines when they came to town but I can't remember exactly! My time in Ann Arbor was 1981-1984...

That enfrijolada sounds yummy, Handy! Wow, that's a trip, Rob. Didn't realize Roger Miller had a Billy Carter and a Roger Clinton.

    Handy Haversack:

The Blind Pig was definitely still there, Rob. And underneath it was the 8 Ball.

I wonder what Second Chance became. I saw some slightly larger bands at the Michigan Theater (They Might Be Giants, e.g.).

I was there 1997-1999: it's where I met Kate! We still have friends in Ypsi (and I have family in western MI).

Kate says Rick's was there but didn't have live music.

There’s a Blind Pig just up the street from me. Craft beer and booze. No food.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:38pm
    Rob W:

Yes my friends an I saw Iggy Pop at the Michigan Theater, and the Jam! Second Chance had already morphed into Nectarine Ballroom, more of a dance club, before I left college - but I don't think it's a venue anymore. Rick's wasn't always that exciting but they sometimes booked touring blues artists - I remember seeing the late Luther Allison there, and Son Seals.

    Rob W:

And you know Handy my better half Katie also went to U-of-M although we didn't meet there, we met in NY through a mutual friend who like us had been on the University radio station WCBN.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:43pm
    Handy Haversack:

Oh, yeah, Nectarine was there -- just a dance club, I think.

A lot of the bars in Ann Arbor were named after hurt animals: Blind Pig, One-Eyed Moose, Red Hawk. It was like living in a Robinson Jeffers poem.

@Rob, my friend Jamie had a WCBN show! That station was one of the things I liked the most about my time there.

Iggy at the Michigan! So great! I worked in a used book and collectibles store that had his early amp for sale! I definitely plugged in and made some noise a couple of times.

I didn't know about WCBN when I applied to go to Michigan - I lucked into my lifetime passion! And well chresti I must confess, I am NOT the most organized organizer! As evidenced by the paltry number of my newly digitized cds I have actually re-filed...!

If it's any comfort Jake, that's the only time I've heard that one. Be interesting to see what American evangelicals would make of that one since so many of them seem to think the Bible's original language is English.

Chinatown in Brooklyn is shut down. But outside of Chinatown proper, many Chinese owned businesses — take out places, 99 cent stores and laundries — shut down even before the “essential business” stuff. Fear of anti-Asian backlash.
