I spent a while wondering what "titty or sock money" meant...until I took it literally and understood it in context.

"A Smile and a Ribbon" reminds me of a friend's description of the family situation she grew up in. The parents were warring alcoholics having knock-down drag-outs downstairs and scarring the children; my friend's sister coped by immersing herself in cheerfulness and Disney songs and singing them loudly and obsessively upstairs to drown out the chaos. That sister left home as soon as she could to work for the mouse. I wonder how many of the people workin' for the mouse have similar backgrounds...

Bob Thorn is certainly a good one to get to know!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:46pm

Thorn is one of the most astonishing people I've ever met. He carries encyclopedias of information in his head and it rolls off his tongue in erudite, perfectly constructed sentences, often tinged with a dollop of wit. A very learned man.

Handy, Irwin, have either of you ever experienced re-creations of the Boston/Massachusetts version of baseball? Who'd have TIME or PATIENCE today for such re-creations?

The Massachusetts game had five bases. They lost out to the New York game.

Is the Mass. version more rounders and the NY one more town-ball?

I worked on the editorial and production end of a book several years back that made a case for more acknowledgment of the role of Alexander Joy Cartwright to the formalization of the game. Certainly he was crucial in spreading it west -- and to Hawaii.

Irwin:

John Thorn: "Recent scholarship has revealed the history of baseball’s origin to be merely a lie agreed upon. According to the Hall of Fame plaque for Alexander Joy Cartwright, Jr., he is the 'Father of Modern Base Ball. Set bases 90 feet apart. Established 9 innings as a game and 9 players as a team. Organized the Knickerbocker Base Ball Club of N.Y. in 1845. Carried baseball to Pacific Coast and Hawaii in pioneer days.' I can tell you that each and every one of these statements is either demonstrably false or lacks evidence of truth."

I remember our wanting him to endorse the book and that being a nonstarter, I think. This was a set of years back!

There's a sign in the plaque room at Cooperstown that says something to the effect of "All information was thought to be correct at the time it was written"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:58pm

Don't get Thorn started on Cartwright. And I mean DON'T. It's a waste of his time.

Last question I asked Richard Hershberger was, "In about 1850, give or take a decade, what percentage of Americans (all sexes and races) do you think would have played baseball at least once by their 11th birthday? How about football (counting anything they might have called football or could be oonsidered some type of football by us, even if the ball was a stuffed burlap rag)? How about cricket?"

I'm more interested in proto-football, and wanted to get some idea of the relative commonness of ANY KIND of football and any kind of baseball in the mid-19th Century as participant sports. I'm also interested in the degree to which each sport was a children's game carried on by adults or an adult game imitated by children.

By the way, Richard seems to have swallowed the scuttlebutt that early football both in the British Isles and North America was "hard to distinguish from a riot". Of course the ones that caused the most disturbance got the most attention from contemporaries and therefore historians, but this is a very biased selection.

According to Hentoff in the BB's liners, Lee Morgan was "[then] musical director of the Messengers (in charge of the library)." No other mention of arrangers, except that it seems to have started as an impromptu jam (led by Morgan) during a Messengers residency in Paris.
