Good night, everyone! See you soon here on the playlist. Stay safe, and don't breathe if you go outside.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:13am
Handy Haversack:

@mariano, so, it's based on both, kind of. It's a 1e AD&D clone with a lot of rough edges sanded off and a setting that's the lost arctic continent of Earth in another dimension with a bunch of Earth tribal groups having stumbled through at various periods but once ruled by a version of the classical Hyperboreans -- sorcerer-rulers of unrivaled power until they got decadent. And then eventually a plague took out most of the continent. So vast areas of howling wilderness populated by things out of D&D, Lovecraft, Smith, Howard, Vance. And tiny human settlements. And then my version skews even a little weirder ...

Uh, Mr. P, you can just join my game, you know.

Mr. Pumpy, A friends father wrote the forward to the Carlos Castenada book Don Juan: A Yaqui Way Of Knowledge. It was originally published by UCLA. Of course, as it would play out, it became highly contested as a work of serious anthropology. When I asked Walter, who had been Castenatas faculty adviser about it, he became irritated and dismissive and said it was the biggest mistake of his professional life.

@mariano: the world and game are a published product, a fairly successful little indie company. Well, one dude. He put a bunch of magic items that I wrote and a couple of monsters into the second printing.

I think my take on the setting is likely a little too weird for him to publish adventures I write -- but I could also get off my ass and give it a whirl! Dozens of dollars could be at stake!

Holy shit, coela: my whole life I never knew there was an actual animal called a basilisk.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:25am

Two guys from my work have gotten sick. One is just about recovered. Sounds like the other is having a harder time, which, you know, just sucks.

No like first- or even second-circle friends (or fam) has been sick, though a few people think they *might* have been. Everyone is guessing about a lot of things.

Swings and roundabouts. Strikes and gutters. Every day has a lot of different weirdnesses. I am working from home. Job seems stable for now. Kate has lost 2/3 of her jobs, and the rest is doubtful since it doesn't look like schools are going back.

So, like everyone, everything is weird.

One thing that really freaks me out is friends writing from out of state just breathlessly, "Are you all OK? It sounds like a NIGHTMARE!" I try to assure people that the hospitals must be, and our health workers are really taking it on the chin but that our quarantine experiences must be pretty much like theirs, just more on foot. Like our lives.

I think the news must be making NYC look pretty nightmarish, but I get all of my news from the accu and Salvage, so I am a bad judge.

I found this helpful and sane seeming. Listener Brian with a Beta B shared it: www.chronicle.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:36am
mariano:

So far everyone I know is fine, Mr. Pumpy. Just spoke to my uncle earlier, he works at University hospital, which is the front line here in New Orleans. He said that a few days a go, they were taking 12-14 bodies out every day. However, in the last 2-3 days, he says it's been 2-3 bodies, which he says is more or less normal (well, "normal").

Now, that's of course pure anecdata, but maybe it's a hopeful sign that confinement has started to work. There was a huge spike today in Louisiana, jumped to over 10,000 cases from (I think) somewhere in the 3-4,000 range. But part of the spike was expected, as the results of tests administered weeks ago start to come in. I guess we'll see either way.

Mr. Pumpy:

Handy, thanks for sharing. It helps me personally to hear form people I know, and what they are going through. I'm guessing Kate is freelance, or some form thereof.

I've had some friends of my pop and such. Some parents of both fellow teachers and our students have fallen victim. It is rough out there.

My only close situation to my knowledge is trumpeter Wallace Roney. Through certain circumstances I came to learn he lived in my town a few years ago, and we hit it off. I was in the beginning stages of helping him write his bio. That's small beans though considering he died. He had given me his number years ago and was into putting the book together. It's yet another reminder that one shouldn't assume there will be time for this and that later.

Even the seemingly simple shit has no guarantees. Wallace went nowhere without his horn, and I am well aware why. No matter where we were he would have it in this ratty case with a broken zipper. I threatened to fix that zipper many times, alas never did it in time. What I liked about him, as I do about many, is that he had a somewhat singular vision...gigging and blowing his horn. Anyhow, I don't pretend we were like brothers or anything, but I got to know him and would call him up and grab a bite here and there as he regaled me with insane stories of the jazz world...and other things.

So...I sit here, pops fragile as well, my best bud's mom in lockdown at 84 because she lives in a 65 and over joint that got infected. She is also a great friend of mine. Silver lining of it all, I can be with my dad who we know had issues since Xmas.

I'm a few deep and babbling, but I want to finish by saying I appreciate getting to know some of you cats within the past 6 months...and it is a benefit now more than ever.

Peace and love, baby!

Four of those six make up most of my internet traffic, especially now that there are no sports, coela. And I always approve of good security protocols.

That said, I do miss baseball.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:43am
Mr. Pumpy:

mariano...I don't know if they like as much as can't help it. My father has a twisted look on his face during those transactions. But hey, I'm on this side of it, so what the hell do I know?! We both know this, age does not matter. One can be sixty and still be subject to the same parental pronouncement. I get that though. I am wise enough to let it go. Although sometimes he seems to be looking for a fight and that gets a greater rise. Bring it, pops!

Is anyone else plucking nose hairs right now? I only ask because, while it is most likely out of solitude and all, perhaps there are subliminal messages within Sungguh Terpaksa. Ouch! Hurts so good.

Handy...as long as you're offering. I hope you have some lengthy shears.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:51am

@coela: If you aren't already familiar, Maangchi has a YT piece on homemade veggie kimchi that seems totally fail-safe and tasty.

I must crawl off, good people. Thanks to all for hours of good company, sonic and otherwise.

@mariano:

Apparatus of the Dark Kimmerians: These apparatuses serve the subterranean Kimmerians in the exploration of their dangerous, dark realm. A harness clings to the wearer’s shoulders, supporting a tight-fitting metal and leather helm in the shape of a horse’s head. Held by a stiff mane on top of the helm is a small cage in which a genetically altered songbird is wired in place, fed and watered by tubes that pierce its breast. These birds are essentially immortal as long as the apparatus functions and they meet no fouler end. The birds’ feathers house symbiotic algae that glow with a strong but ghastly green radiance, providing effective light in a 20' radius. These algae completely protect the birds from extremes of heat and cold, excluding magical effects. If exposed to toxic gases, the tiny creature dies. but this triggers the apparatus to clamp shut its horselike jaws. The wearer will be able to breathe stale, recycled air for a full day cycle before needing to replenish the apparatus’s stores. The Guild of the Pierced Breast in Krimmea can replace the bird and restore the apparatus to full functionality.
