Chris Farrell:

@coel- I agree it was an act of aggression that a solution exist for (and crosses borders into lives unknown to the person experiencing the crisis). Luckily, I was up playing my bagpipes and re assembled the situation.

Along with current chat: there was gnarly case of dust in my old establishment it was never dealt with until I moved out, now I have the occasional flutter of dust almost reminiscently reminding me of the dangers of preemptive nostalgia.
  10:33pm
JakeGould:

First, hello Sam!

And as far as rent goes, I think people in cut-throat cities need to be very careful. One tactic that scummy landlords in gentrifying neighborhoods use is to let people be behind in rent for a few months. Renters feel good, but legally the landlord then has the right to say, “Owes back rent… Kick them to the curb…” It happens a lot more in retail, but it happens.

I think everyone needs a genuine bailout now. And $1,200 that will be taxed (!!!) is really pathetic. I mean the money will help. But still…

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:37pm

Certainly wouldn't put that kind of behavior past my landlord, Jake. That's good advice. I also think people need to start forming tenants unions as soon as possible so that we have the kind of support networks that make it possible to safely and credibly threaten rent strikes.
  10:37pm
Carmichael:

Earthquakes. ‘Nuff said.

In general I think people should just support each other even as little as morally nowadays. Don’t have an explicit plan but just be ready to help.

My last landlord was very well connected to the local community board and despite being in the place for 12+ years and actually doing light maintenance around the building when they wouldn’t — and always paying rent on time — they treated me like crap when I broke the lease. The thing is they jacked up the rent for the same place by like 40% after I left and knew they would find someone. So they were nasty and mean to just be that way. Ultimate scum. Never trust NYC landlords.

My current place is truly rent stabilized and the owners and super is tons better. Neighbors nicer too. But still: Know your rights.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:45pm
coelacanth∅:

Chris, i never considered it an act of aggression. those are the person's words. i just thought it was likely trolling. not a regular wfmu person; maybe one of the (few) people who come on using a variety of names, looking for attention or just to ruin others' good time, out of jealousy.
if the person had shown a profile or even a name i probably would've lost a lot of sleep over it.
because then it's family.

...and maybe it is family.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:46pm
Sam Segal:

Glad you ended up finding a better place, Jake. My unit used to be rent stabilized, but the landlord figured out some loop hole to take it out of stabilization before I moved in. Been in the place for 2.5 years now, and they've only raised the rent $50 since I moved in, but when the next lease starts in August they're jacking it up another $100. Could be worse though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:46pm

.in any case i realise it was a real call for help and i hope the person stays strong.

In times of turmoil don’t turn to the tinfoil has been a helping phrase to me.

My picture of Alan Watts reminds me this is all one big magical accident.

Quick story: I used to have posters all over my wall in my room at the house I grew up in. Some of greats at the time, jay and silent bob Grateful Dead sublime etc.

After years of disobeying my parents and chasing something that wasn’t meant to be, I came home to a room with no posters on the walls. Just white walls and no door. Sort of a sign I needed to change.

I had been wanting to share pre-COVID. And also ask if anyone has any thoughts about the flaming lips trajectory as a band?

Chris Thanks -i don't remember the truman show comment at all though! (although i can guess)
and chresti deserves the credit for the made-up fake language idea
  11:14pm
Chris Farrell:

I think it was a message that “my wall art” was more so me putting stuff on their walls. A symbol that I can’t go and act and do whatever I want without repercussions.

I briefly had an atlas up after that and have now just grown to embrace the white walls as a blank canvas.

Needless to say when and if I get my own place there will not be a single white wall in the house.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:15pm

Back from a walk. A few bodegas open, pizza delivery bicyclists; one encounter with a smart phone zombie who got too close. A few walkers but Washington Hts. mainly empty, quiet, eerie, spacious.
  11:34pm
Chris Farrell:

Yeah, looking back I like to think of it as a good form of downsizing and preparation. The atlas (for the time it was up) served me very well, I would spend minutes at a time getting a feel for the lay of land.

My failure to launch has provided me with all the amenities and Absences that I would have expected.

Thanks for the report from outside the wire, TDK. The bodegas in my neighborhood are all open as well. It has certainly been more quiet recently, but there are still a lot of people gathering in the park and hanging out on stoops. I imagine the streets are pretty dead at this hour though.
