I play music that is old and that is new. Some of it is digital while some is analog. It is from many different countries; sometimes it is loud and at other times it is quiet.

@tmoyo @JoeB Japanese people had already been obsessively washing hands and wearing masks every winter and also good at social distancing, so maybe nothing much has to change. (Kidding. I know many men there don't wash their hands after using bathroom which is gross! >:(

Dropof Goldensun:

JoesphB, I myself am only wearing gloves when I go out shopping but I have to believe the masks do help to some degree for various reasons. To be honest, telling people to stay at least 6 feet apart and masks do nothing contradict each other. Keeping a distance is to prevent droplets spread though the air and so is a mask if worn properly. Distance is better AND it leaves more masks available for healthcare workers.

I had been looking forward to this week, young composers at work were supposed to premiere a first draft of their graduation pieces. I've been thinking about planting bamboo. As I understand, some are less likely to grow out of control than others. I guess I'm interested in the "clumping," not "running," kind.

@melinda That is interesting. I certainly feel uncomfortable when strangers are standing close to me (unless it's on the dance floor) think it must be cultural. Feel the strong need to start singing Sting (♬Don't stand so close to me♬) to creep them back off.

@ParUbi bamboo is such a nice thing, apparently as long as they're under control! I wonder if cats eat them. I want plants that cats don't vandalize.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:29pm
ParUbi:

Here's a factoid that I found interesting: "Bamboo absorbs 2x more carbon dioxide than trees, which is why they are known to act as carbon sinks. It also generates a vast amount of oxygen, totalling up to 30% more than most plants and trees. "

Mayuko, yes I am!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:35pm

I do like my bamboo but I have to continually keep it at bay. I didn't plant it, it was there when I bought the house. Now let me get back to sharpening my machete.

Japanese knotweed, which has different leaves, similar stalks, is also attractive but aggressive. And high medicinal value.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:39pm

But cutting down subtropical forests for bamboo crops is not a good idea, guys
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:40pm
ParUbi:

@melinda-- knotweed is *everywhere* in my neighborhood now. Super-invasive, but the shoots are edible
  1:40pm
P-90:

Bamboo is an important, even amazing plant. For many years it has been pointed out by scientists that bamboo is the plant you would want to bring if you were colonizing another planet: it grows fast; can be used to build shelter, furniture, tools, etc; the young plants are very nutritious to eat, the fibers can be woven to make sturdy fabrics, rope, and so on. And it absorbs a LOT of atmospheric CO2. So if we look at strategies for repairing and rebuilding the planet we already live on, bamboo is an enormous potential resource.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:42pm
Dropof Goldensun:

Not to dwell on the topic of bamboo but one more thing. The name of my "band" is Bamboo Time Machine. One of the guys in the band was asking me for pieces of bamboo and when I asked him what he wanted it for he said he was building a bamboo time machine and we all immediately loved the name. P-90 we constantly hear everything you just mentioned from Patrick, the guy who coined the name!

You can also whack people in the head with bamboo.

as wonderful as it is, it is not native to north america and has the potential to irreversibly obliterate the ecology.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:49pm
coelacanth∅:

(but i think there are indigenous knotweeds here)
  1:50pm
P-90:

Dropof: Cool band name. Should also add in this context that hemp has many of those same qualities: grows fast, produces useful fibers, absorbs vast amounts of CO2 per kilo of growing plant material, and also fixes lots of nitrogen, meaning you can grow it almost anywhere there’s some water, than chop it down and plow it into the soil where it enriches the soil for other crops to grow. So: I’m betting we’ll see lots of hemp and bamboo planted in years to come here in North America, as our culture comes to grips with the necessity of combating climate change.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:51pm
Dropof Goldensun:

P-90, Patrick is also a very big fan of hemp and especially it's medicinal cousin!
