	3:18pm Listener Robert: Yesterday I came across an answer on Quora I wanted to respond to, but now can't find. Someone said a sad feature of the music biz is that it's such a buyer's market, with so much being given away that there are a lot of very good musicians (he said singers specifically) who can't make a living at it. I look at that as a good thing. It means we're rich enough as a society that a great many of us are able to develop fairly high musical art in our spare time for our own and our friends' enjoyment, without even any hope of making money at it.

	3:28pm brainiac: Yes, but this situation requires artists to make sacrifices in order to create. Can we conceive of a world in which people can devote themselves to their art without fear of starving to death?

	3:30pm Listener Robert: We can conceive such a world for SOME of them, brainiac: this world. But that still leaves a lot of room for people who've gotten very good at it while doing something else to keep from starving to death.

	3:33pm brainiac: My point is simply this: the constraints put on musicians to make a living "doing something else" constrains their freedom to create and truncates their opportunity to become proficient.

	3:35pm Listener Robert: It may truncate it, but not by much. That's the amazing thing. With all the support in the world, could you imagine MANY musicians becoming SIGNIFICANTLY better than they otherwise would?

	3:41pm mariano: I love how Blue Skies lends itself to so many interpretations. One of Irving Berlin's most versatile songs. I love the Willie Nelson version from Stardust too.
	3:43pm brainiac: Applying market forces to artists squelches their space to experiment, refine and produce completely original work. Inevitably what you the listener gets is a homogenized, derivative regurgitation of what has sold in the past. Commercial, not creative. That's what we're here to get away from ... at least I am, anyway :)
	3:46pm Listener Robert: The answerer on Quora said he got that thought from watching one of those TV talent competitions. Brainiac, I think the amateurism scenario is actually the most conducive to development of new and original stuff. Again, the DJs here exemplify just that.

With you on Radiohead, Irwin: seems like the music industry's version of "artsy" but I have friends whose opinions I respect who like them, so no offense to anyone.

Someone said a sad feature of the music biz is that it's such a buyer's market, with so much being given away that there are a lot of very good musicians (he said singers specifically) who can't make a living at it. I look at that as a good thing. It means we're rich enough as a society that a great many of us are able to develop fairly high musical art in our spare time for our own and our friends' enjoyment, without even any hope of making money at it.
