	4:21pm Elizabeth: Four years ago , two days before Bowie passed away, I went to see Tony Visconti and Woody Woodmansey perform The Man Who Sold the World on Bowies Birthday at the Highline Ballroom in NYC. Halfway through the show, Tony takes out his cell phone and calls Bowie. He holds the phone up to the audience and we all sing Happy Birthday to him, not knowing that he was so sick and only having a few days to live. Tony then told us Bowie asked if we liked his new album. We all screamed yes. That was probably Bowie's last " appearance " with the public. I am so glad I was there in addition to seeking Bowie perform in 2000, 2002, and 2003. I would have loved to see him in the 70s, but I was just too young.

	4:24pm RiW: learning of Bowie's passing live on a WFMU playlist is something I'll never forget, even though I no longer remember whose show it was.
	4:24pm DJ GeorgyGirl: We went to London the weekend after he died. Laid flowers in the Soho doorway where he shot the Ziggy cover (flowers EVERYWHERE) and then went to Brixton to the mural and joined the vigil. So many people, and so much love.

	4:25pm DJ GeorgyGirl: And then a few months later went to Berlin and laid flowers at his old flat and hung out in his local where we all sang his songs. <3

	4:26pm Rob: My family moved to Northern California in the 70s. My brother came home with a music magazine (Cream) that had run a Bowie look-alike contest. My brother noted that the 3rd place winner was from the city we just moved to. It turned out she lived 3 doors down. We became fast friends. I loved that she owned 24 pairs of platform shoes.

	4:29pm Elizabeth: Georgy, that is amazing that you went to Berlin to his flat! Also to gather in London with all the fans! Two years before he passed away, I was in London and I went to the street where the cover of Ziggy was shot also.I am so happy I got to visit there.
	4:30pm RiW: now I'm in a tire (or tyre) shop. The smell of rubber is overpowering, nauseating even. I don't know how rubber fetishists do it.

	4:56pm Mark R: I happened to be doing an overnight fill-in the night Bowie died ( think he had died late the previous afternoon but the news didn't hit the wire til after midnight. I had to scrap whatever show I had planned and did an all-Bowie show instead. Fortunately, Therese (who I was following) had already pulled all his CDs out of the library and brought them into the studio. Like you, George Girl, I focused pretty much exclusively on the early stuff (although I did dig up a performance/interview from the Dick Cavett show circa late '74 on YouTube). It was a sad show, but there was also a feeling of community as everyone commented about their feelings about him, the influence he'd had on their lives, etc.

	5:15pm huomenta: OK, I must share an embarrassing childhood memory. Back in 1983 I had just started school as a seven-year-old and in the newest issue of Suosikki (the late Finnish equivalent of Smash Hits for instance) they gave an address (probably fan club/record company) one could use to write to David Bowie. I wrote a letter full of illegible gibberish I thought was english and was prepared to send it. But: my parents refused to provide the necessary stamps. I threw a fit and marked the day in question as "Gloomy Day" in the almanac on our kitchen wall. Only after that they had to give in and the letter went on its merry way.

	5:19pm Linda Lee: Elizabeth, that was probably Brie Darling. she wasn't in the 4 member band we think of when we think 'Fanny', but she sat in often at the Fanny house. she was in the sisters' first band, the Sveltes & their newest configuration, 'Fanny Walked the Earth'.
	5:20pm Elizabeth: There is also an episode of the Dinah Shore show, with Bowie and his karate instructor who does this high kick and scares Henry Winkler! Nancy Walker was also on that show. a surreal line up to say the least!

	5:21pm melinda: I remember the party at which I first heard this song, the mother of the friend hosting the party was an old hippie and dancing furiously to it. Back then parents didn't generally chaperone parties but I think they were on probation for a minor drug offense or something like that and had to be at the party to make sure there was no underage substance use.

	5:32pm coelacanth∅: okay -maybe...and not in any order- heroes; the man who sold the world; time; the prettiest star; aladin sane; tvc 15; station to station; lazarus; blackstar; i can't give everything away; five years; fame; space oddity... that's 13. as i gave up on Bowie pretty much with lodger, then completely with let's dance...then only became interested in his music again 2 days before he checked out; i'm still filling in those decades in-between.

	5:33pm Mark R: The Dinah Shore I remember was David with Iggy, when they were just back from Berlin and David was supporting Iggy by playing keyboards on his tour. Dinah was obviously smitten with (or at least enamored of) David and absolutely freaked out by Iggy. The best part was it was on at 4 in the afternoon after school and I was watching with with my mom (and my dad was home early for some reason, in his boxer shorts, who thought those two guys were, well...shall we say effeminate.)

RE: Mr. Cavett, I think (whether or not he spent any time with Janis), he was rather innocent when it came to drugs (probably a little pot smoking was the extent of it), so it's quite likely he wouldn't notice someone coked out of his gourd, sniffing every 5 seconds, he probably thought, "Oh the poor fellow has caught himself a nasty cold.)

	5:46pm Mod Mokka Matti: What's crazy is that The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust was released less than a month after I was - I had forgotten we both emerged into the world so close in time chronologically ( for some reason, I was thinking it came out later that year).

	4:20pm Mr Fab: That's what occurred to me when Moonage Daydream was playing: gawd, what must this have been like when it dropped in the early '70s? Must have been many a blown mind.

	4:21pm Elizabeth: Four years ago , two days before Bowie passed away, I went to see Tony Visconti and Woody Woodmansey perform The Man Who Sold the World on Bowies Birthday at the Highline Ballroom in NYC. Halfway through the show, Tony takes out his cell phone and calls Bowie. He holds the phone up to the audience and we all sing Happy Birthday to him, not knowing that he was so sick and only having a few days to live. Tony then told us Bowie asked if we liked his new album. We all screamed yes. That was probably Bowie's last " appearance " with the public. I am so glad I was there in addition to seeking Bowie perform in 2000, 2002, and 2003. I would have loved to see him in the 70s, but I was just too young.

	4:23pm Linda Lee: that's lovely, Elizabeth! I'll never tire of saying I saw him in 74 in New York. alone. no one I knew was interested! really super exciting.

	4:24pm RiW: learning of Bowie's passing live on a WFMU playlist is something I'll never forget, even though I no longer remember whose show it was.
	4:24pm DJ GeorgyGirl: We went to London the weekend after he died. Laid flowers in the Soho doorway where he shot the Ziggy cover (flowers EVERYWHERE) and then went to Brixton to the mural and joined the vigil. So many people, and so much love.

	4:25pm RiW: but it was like my entire teenagehood died.
	4:25pm DJ GeorgyGirl: And then a few months later went to Berlin and laid flowers at his old flat and hung out in his local where we all sang his songs. <3

	4:26pm Rob: My family moved to Northern California in the 70s. My brother came home with a music magazine (Cream) that had run a Bowie look-alike contest. My brother noted that the 3rd place winner was from the city we just moved to. It turned out she lived 3 doors down. We became fast friends. I loved that she owned 24 pairs of platform shoes.

	4:56pm Mark R: I happened to be doing an overnight fill-in the night Bowie died ( think he had died late the previous afternoon but the news didn't hit the wire til after midnight. I had to scrap whatever show I had planned and did an all-Bowie show instead. Fortunately, Therese (who I was following) had already pulled all his CDs out of the library and brought them into the studio. Like you, George Girl, I focused pretty much exclusively on the early stuff (although I did dig up a performance/interview from the Dick Cavett show circa late '74 on YouTube). It was a sad show, but there was also a feeling of community as everyone commented about their feelings about him, the influence he'd had on their lives, etc.

Back in 1983 I had just started school as a seven-year-old and in the newest issue of Suosikki (the late Finnish equivalent of Smash Hits for instance) they gave an address (probably fan club/record company) one could use to write to David Bowie. I wrote a letter full of illegible gibberish I thought was english and was prepared to send it. But: my parents refused to provide the necessary stamps. I threw a fit and marked the day in question as "Gloomy Day" in the almanac on our kitchen wall. Only after that they had to give in and the letter went on its merry way.
