Hey Daniel! Just heard about — and it barely just happened — but the Tsuruga International Culture Festival which honors Chiune Sugihara, who as Wikipedia states “…was a Japanese government official who served as vice consul for the Japanese Empire in Kaunas, Lithuania. During the Second World War, Sugihara helped six thousand Jews flee Europe by issuing transit visas to them so that they could travel through Japanese territory, risking his job and the lives of his family.”

Found out about this via Damon Krukowski’s social media. Damon and Naomi played and Damon’s dad was 10 years old when his life was saved by Chiune Sugihara’s actions.

Official website here: tsurufes.jp

Quick Google translation here: “Tsuruga City is a city with a history of landing many Jewish refugees who were saved by Polish orphaned children in the 1920s and visas issued by Chigo Sugihara in the 1940s. The compassionate response of Tsuruga citizens to orphans and refugees at the time and their interaction with them established a friendly relationship with countries such as Poland and Israel.”

JakeGould:

Note how he did this act of kindness in a time of hour, but the Russians allowed people on the Trans-Siberian Railway for 5x the price. Always gouging! “From 18 July to 28 August 1940, aware that applicants were in danger if they stayed behind, Sugihara decided to ignore his orders and issued ten-day visas to Jews for transit through Japan. Given his inferior post and the culture of the Japanese Foreign Service bureaucracy, this was an unusual act of disobedience. He spoke to Soviet officials who agreed to let the Jews travel through the country via the Trans-Siberian Railway at five times the standard ticket price.”
