Favoriting November 10, 2019: You Can Sample: Wave Two

Over the past three decades I have been sampling for music projects. From recording to cassettes... to saving on floppy to zips... to organizing on the hard drive. Today we are going to hear those samples back-to-back for 4 hours.

Thousands of files have been sourced for future 'You Can Sample' shows. This is the second installment of 3,200 sounds.

Some quick notes on the process of collecting samples:
- In Windows 10, searched all sample folders for *.wav
- Used a tiny program, 'Bulk Rename Utility' to randomize the order of files and apply a number prefix (00000)
- Selected blocks of files in the folder (in 4 hour sets for future shows)
- Open Appended Files in Adobe Audition (and took a screenshot that appears below)
- Used another tiny program, 'JR Directory Printer' to print the directory contents of the files in the folder to a text file.

I'm listening to this for the first time today, live with you on the show! It's all random and I'm sure we will hear some funny bits colliding with one another.

NowhereBoy91:

So, for reasons that are totally sane and logical, I actually have the file for the last "You Can Sample" on my phone.
  11/7 1:45pm
NowhereBoy91:

I played the show on the pop-up player and used Audacity to record the audio from my computer while I was at work. One big 4 hour track.
  11/7 1:47pm
NowhereBoy91:

I don't really know how to brag about this to you, Otis, as I haven't been able to easily find you on social media I don't want the clout, I just wanted to let you know that someone's listening, god damn it!

So yeah. Not sure if I'll be able to catch this week's epsiode, as I'll be playing Dungeons and Dragons. Regardless, I hope it goes well and I hope to listen to it in the later times.

Does anybody remember how to stop the fire that happens two hours after this show? I recall that I wrote it down in my notebook, but I left that in 2028 after the ziggernauts devoured DC.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:50pm
Otis Fodder:

Unsure ParUbi as I have not made it to 2119 but I have visited 2123 where the fire was documented a mere 4 years earlier. I believe sample 03994 played backwards provide a clear answer and sample 05036 a path to resolution.

When you hear 'bran flakes' or song titles of bran stuff, I recorded WFMU DJs in the early 2000s searching the archives for shows that played our stuff and have used those FMU soundbytes live in the past.

Listening to this now, I think... wow, so this is where a significant portion of my life went. Ha!
  2:28pm
Martinibomb:

Processing sound thru old samplers for the sound especially an old s900/950 and then recording that back into the DAW is the way to go. Speed up the pitch when you sample and then slow it down for that extra grit the way they used to do it. Also saves memory cool trick

that's a heavy thought, Otis, but keep in mind that you've entertained millions. Ot thousands. Or at least, me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:33pm
Otis Fodder:

Most samples here are from 1998-on all WAV files (low-bit to hi) but some are from various ways of archiving before. For a while I saved on VHS tapes in the mid-90s and DAT tapes. Cassettes for sure. My samplers from late 80s to mid-90s were a Roland S-10, Ensoniq EPS and upgraded to a EPS-16 after.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:35pm

@Fab hah yeh similar here... except I used an Amiga up until 1999 w/ that S900. I still used the s900 for processing sound even when I moved to Acid around the same time u did. You can run stuff thru it live and use the filter it's a pretty great machine
  2:51pm
Martinibomb:

My order of programs.. heh goes.. Octatrack/Amiga to Bars&Pipes/Amiga to Acid to Protools to Ableton and moving toward Reaper. However, iPad apps are super amazing today. I use Beatmaker 3 & Korg Gadget. I typically have that plugged into my Akai MPC1000 with JJOS, EMU ESI-4000 (it has super rad digital filters) and Roland Sp404-SX.

Hello all
Speaking of reliable vintage hardware, a coworker brought over a "portable" oscilloscope from the sixties at work. It weighs less than 40 pounds! But almost no latency, and allegedly repairable (that should be put to the test soon)

@Otis can you get Canadian grants? Have you ever looked into that? They spend way more on artists up there than they do here in the States. I think Coover BC spends like 22mil on Art and Portland only spends like 2mil (similar size cities)
  3:15pm
Martinibomb:

Coover BC is a little bigger than Portland but you know what I mean
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:17pm

I can as a resident within Canada. Have not had a project in mind to apply for one as of yet, but have thought about it as several friends and an archive I work with here is all about grants. Times have changed from 15+ years ago to now for bands and grants (I have heard) but still there are many opportunities here for artists. It's complicated however as with anywhere.

We could have used some food! ARB bought chips n salsa, Greg brought some liquid refreshers.

ParUbi, the EASY easiest would be to put everything in itunes, shuffle play.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:48pm
Otis Fodder:

ParUbi, not sure of the exact app for live purposes, but would be interested to know of a program where I could do this (where all files here are just open appended in a wav file)... but to do it live accessing all my WAV files.

What I've done is cut them up in audacity, but it's a real pain and arbitrarily stitching them together doesn't really feel random. The bulk random-rename would help a lot though, and that's new to me.
Avatar 3:55pm

yes! that's what i'm talking about too. audacity. but i'd have a randomizing method tell me what to do.

Oh, cutting up first, didn't read carefully. I don't know of any way to randomly cut up anything. Think you'd have to cut up by "hand," then load 'em all into itunes, hit shuffle play, and record that.
Avatar 4:02pm
Linda Lee:

i think that's right. so the only issue is, how do you cut them up?
Avatar 4:03pm

I was A-Z with Comps and Soundtrack sections. But now, it's all random.

I'm doing laundry too, haha. Knitting inbetween trips to the basement. Once that's done, I'm going to try a new lentil soup recipe. After soup I'll put together my show for tomorrow!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:21pm

Knitting is on my to-learn list. Playing records, cat on the lap, lookin' out my window...nittin'... that's a nice plan.

LL - It's live 10-midnight Central on Mondays. I record all the shows but am bad about posting them. There are a few (mostly guest sets) at soundcloud.com... Most recent set of me is the Halloween fill-in for Abstract Science (another show). It doesn't have me talking on it though, i pre-recorded that mix and just posted it that way.

I can see where this would be super annoying to listen to if you weren't primed for weirdness by WFMU or other means. Your brain wants to complete the samples, not jump to the next thing.
