Larry were you in la in '69?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:05pm

During the Okiethon last week, we were in San Francisco with the fog blowing thru the window, BUT tonight we are back in Manson country!

@C - I was in NJ in the 2nd Grade!

Used to watch TRDS pretty regularly. I would love to find out more about a band I vaguely recall -- Angel's Damnation, I seem to recall -- who appeared there. Who in the -- pardon the expression -- Hell were they?

so...why l.a. for this show?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:08pm

This hits the mark. One of Steve Stills best songs.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:09pm

Because of Once Upon a Time In Hollywood, and my personal obsessions with LA DJs like Real Don Steele and Humble Harv

I marvel that folks take people like Tarantino (or any Hollywood show-off, or any filmmaker at all) seriously. How does that inspire something like this show? Truly, I can't make the connection.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:14pm

@Erica - I remember exactly where I was when I heard that Mama Cass had died

just had a conversation yesterday about Stephen and Neil and that back then most folks probably expected Stills to be the one who's career would endure...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:16pm
Funky16Corners:

Their musical chemistry was amazing, especially in the Buffalo Springfield
Avatar 10:16pm
Erica:

I read that she died in 1974. I could be wrong. They said she choked on a chicken bone or of eating a ham sandwich but it was a heart attack.
  10:17pm
Dean:

No apology called for. I'm not offended or insulted. I'm baffled. I'd like to learn how the connection is made.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:17pm

Heart attack in a flat in London. I was at the Conestoga Inn n Lancaster, PA on vacation with my family. My Mom loved/loves Mama Cass
Avatar 10:17pm

I wasn't alive when it happened but online research from reliable sources will tell you the truth.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:17pm
coelacanth∅:

i remember hearing Mama Cass died
and of course all the bullshit stories about her choking on food
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:19pm
Franco Twinkie:

The Trip sound track used Flash,Bang,Pow by The Electric Flag for that scene where Peter Fonda is running thru Laural Canyon blazing on acid. It is such an effective piece of music for conveying terror, that it was used in Easy Rider to set you up for spectacular ending.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:19pm
coelacanth∅:

(i was a child, but i still didn't buy it. it was just too perfect to be believable)
  10:20pm
Dean:

I, too, recall the Mama Cass stories. Then and now it remains a great loss. I respected her in ways it would take many years for me to understand.

But "fake news," right? It's a Trump thing?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:21pm
Funky16Corners:

It's amazing how rumors like that persisted over the years
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:22pm

...it just seemed like the exact rumour that her death would elicit

Groovy! ✌️

I've said this before, but so the fuck what: My social studies teacher in the 12th grade went to junior high with Howard Kaylan. He said at an assembly Howard sang a really stupid song, and people threw their lunch at him!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:31pm

And thus were born the Turtles!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:31pm

well, i still have my revereware that was a housewarming gift when i moved out. Paul might be disgusted at what became of his cookware.

That voice, Canned Heat is instantly recognizable.
  10:47pm
Dean:

I have tried in recent years to find LA radio broadcasts, AM, I believe, to which I used to listen during the '90s. It was a call-in show hosted by a fellow named Brother Paul, who fielded callers' laments and questions about their lives and circumstances, and answered with bland religious observations. Would love to hear it again. Musical highlight was the theme song, which was Loggins & Messina's "Peace of Mind," a very nice tune.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:47pm

Alan Wilson. what a profound loss.

Al Wilson. Brilliant, troubled and by all accounts, unwashed and stinking.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:48pm
Funky16Corners:

Thanks!

It was cool, and instructive. Seemed like a genuine attempt to reach out, not your typical religious fund raiser aimed at luring in the gullible.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52pm
Funky16Corners:

There used to be a late night radio show in NYC during the 70s that was kind of like that, with an ex-Catholic priest
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:53pm
Franco Twinkie:

The only problem with KBLA is the signal was so weak, you could only hear it if you were driving around in the San Fernando Valley.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:53pm

We've taken care of that with the magic of the intertubes!

@Erica - Groovy was a local SoCal teen dance party show hosted by a minor actor/singer named Michael Blodgett who shows up in Beyond the Valley of the Dolls

Another buddy of mine probably has a lot of the CG stuff, too. He's in tight with a good friend of Firesign Theater.

But you just can't live in TEXAS
If you don't have lot of soul.

Dean, the only band I saw there besides The Credibility Gap, was The Legion Of Mary. But, I saw the CB there four times.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:26pm

Yeah doc it's hard to read your text before posting it when you're in a rush.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:32pm

yes many people learned about Rod when his fairly abominable disco hits got played and never found out that he was really good once. (even before the masterpiece, Maggie May)

Especially here, when you want to post either while the song you're posting about is still on,or the commentyou're reacting to is still fresh...

One day I was with one of the guys in The Peanut Butter Conspiericy. We were going up to his house to look for some piece of crap in his garage for a show we were working on. He says to me: "See that house? Ray Manzarak lives there. He's a real asshole and he pretends I'm invisible!"

Larry, last Thursday when we were looking for Grannys house I saw The Portero Theater where the Dead practiced during Aoxomoxoa. It's now a spirtiual center of some ilk.

they have a selection of those corn syrup-based flavor syrups at my sorta favorite cafe. i could probably walk in with a can of coke or cream soda and they'd squirt some vanilla syrup in.

John Cippolinas guitar is practically inaudible on that mix. Gary Duncan drove the band, John was the stunt pilot.

Came into some of these LPs from a friend who had about 10,000 CDs, done LPs, and was moving to Manhattan from a Long Island house. Had to content myself with 2 boxes of stuff stuff (my wife was going to kill me, wasn't happy with the small haul). I connected him with FMU, Matt picked up all the rest for the station.

As you wrote in your intro, this is not the 69 of my youth but reminded me of radio in those days when you would hear one tune that electrified you, then one that made you cringe, then one that was ok so you stay tuned waiting for the next great song. Thanks for your efforts putting this together for our entertainment.
