...after Syd - they had to find their way...
Avatar 🦇 1:35pm
Julie:

they are like 3 different bands, if not 4.
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 1:36pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Like the bYRdS after losing writer GeneClark...
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 1:37pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Cliche but - can't imagine the trauma of Syd...til Roger took that as the theme itself...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:39pm
coelacanth∅:

you're right, i think...4.
1. Syd
2. post-Syd adventurous
3. no longer affected by Syd directly stride finally found
4. boring attempt at commercial success
Avatar 🦇 1:40pm
Julie:

I had no idea Syd existed until later, I started listening shortly after The Wall. Like Dark Side of the Moon and the Wall? How is that the same band.
Avatar 🦇 1:41pm
Julie:

I guess if I were a stickler I'd call the first two albums THE Pink Floyd
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 1:42pm

Mad Painter's Band

One writer observed - the ultimate Boomer Nightmare:

Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 1:45pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...I think they're all considerable Artists - just Syd is one of Theee Artists...& Wall & DarkSide are played too much.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:45pm
coelacanth∅:

i fell in Love with wish you were here when it smothered the fm airwaves then got dark side and inadvertently found Syd when i stumbled upon the "masters of rock" comp at the englishtown flea market.
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 1:46pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Two-album set 1st two albums - Piper & Saucerful. 'Nice Pair'. Never saw them apart back then...
Eventually - Solo Syd. Done deal @ that point.
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 1:47pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Hell - I had Ummagumma. Like Satanic Majesties - not supposed to like it but everyone loves it...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:49pm
coelacanth∅:

when the wall came out i dismissed the pink floyd. yet another favorite band turned to shit, in my opinion. my brother, knowing i Loved pink floyd and not knowing i wanted nothing to do with the wall, gave me the album for xmas, which i still have...played maybe 3 times, except side 2 played maybe 6x.
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 1:50pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Yeah - even twixt Dark & Wall...it were the Disco era...great in its way...the Architectural Student: well-constructed...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:51pm
coelacanth∅:

yeah i got a nice pair too. as it turns out even that is a bit of a collector item.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:52pm
coelacanth∅:

(and my 2 favorite floyd albums, now)
Avatar 🦇 1:54pm
Julie:

Yes! I got Nice Pair too! And Syd's solo stuff, was there a double LP of Madcap/Barrett? I think that's what I had.
Avatar 🦇 1:55pm
Julie:

Wish You Were Here is a great one
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:56pm

shamefully i have 0 Syd solo albums. by the time i realised how good they are i couldn't afford them.
- i listen to them on spotify.
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 1:58pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Oh - I got the Syd box...Crazy Diamond I think they call it!...
A lot of people say - preDarkSide for me...
Avatar 🦇 2:00pm
Julie:

Yes fantastic box, up there with the Nick Drake box
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:01pm
coelacanth∅:

i still Love wish you were here. and i like animals too, though not as much as i used to.
meddle through animals i really listened to almost to death. i'm pretty well back on meddle though. (as incohesive as it is)
Avatar 🦇 2:03pm
Julie:

I really don't know Animals at all. I need to re-listen
Avatar 🦇 2:04pm
Julie:

doesn't Nick Mason have more stuff tucked away (and yes of course I bought the giant box)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:05pm
coelacanth∅:

it's intense, during the lively passages; and a bit boring here and there
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 2:07pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

I think Waters is considerable. Mucking about in his depressions & neuroses is not always such a good time tho'... As Musicians & Recording Artists - you can't argue.
Avatar 🦇 2:09pm
Julie:

The Wall was perfect teenage angst listening
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 2:09pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Syd was in that small handful of Greatests who articulated & presented a distinct World & Style. I think Piper is about the most actually Psychedelic album there is.
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 2:10pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...I say Syd was Alternative before there was even a Classic - & sue me I stand by it...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:12pm
coelacanth∅:

i'm not a Waters hater. self-indulgent? yes.
so? very creative for ...9 years? 10?
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 2:13pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

You know - you jam in a band & try to be Psych - & there will be Floyd. It's just so.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:14pm
coelacanth∅:

even the wall had potential, as much as i dislike it. if it were skimmed to a single lp i would've liked it.
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 2:15pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Also interesting that they were Huge - but after Syd - the Band was the Star - the Albums even - not the faces...I suppose The Who had that w/ Tommy & stuff...
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 2:16pm

Even The Beatles live under Pepper a bit...
I have a strong AntiPopulist streak. The Wall was just - too...

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:17pm
coelacanth∅:

Julie i understand why people liked the wall so much. it's just that everything said on the album they had said already before, more subtly. and (as indicated^) it's drawn out for effect, like it's this epic masterpiece...which i guess is what some people think it is; but i just think it's drawn out.
