This is where all of culture and all of time are collapsed into one seductive portal and viewed through the panoramic lens of the exotic. Come and embark on an armchair-travel virtual-voyage to the heart of timeless darkness and beyond; embrace the numinous monolith of the exotic immensity. Let us find that place where hybridization meets its destiny as pure fantasy. Let us become observers observing those others who are ourselves. You wear your mask and I'll wear mine.

Good to know, Columbia is ground zero for cumbia.

Yeah, it begins in Columbia and spreads out through Latin America; when it reaches the Peruvian mountains, it's as though it's caught there among the clouds and begins to transform into something truly mystical

I saw a live gig w/ /rupture around 2001, and he played cumbia. Then I heard Doug play some, and I was hooked...

I think I learned of cumbia from the Rough Guide series.

weirdly refreshing sound from Los Yungas, very clean somehow, in a very nice way

i got a cumbia marathon premium cd years ago. i'm not home or i'd check; for some reason don't remember if it was from Doug's show, Rob's or someone else's.

Quantic compiled quite a few of the Colombian things I was mentioning earlier, I think he did the Original Sound of Cumbia comp

@melinda: I got that album after Mexico when Tower Recs had a fire sale. (I heard that Morricone vibe as well)>

@chresti: check out Uproot Andy & Gecko Jones, they do contemporary club/bass cumbia-isms...

Chiming in to say thanks for that Cumbia set. It was killer!

to be honest i rarely listened to rupture when he was on fmu -more dancey than my liking was, though i might get into it now...for some reason was compelled to get one of his premiums though -an mp3 disc with a flac file available to create 3 cds. one of the best premiums! (not because it's so much; it's just very good!)

Chicha was looked down upon in Lima as 'poor working class music' until Peruvian-Americans started to embrace it, then, it became trendy in the capital,

@coel: Oh yeah. I had a coworker leaving back to Hong Kong w/in a week, and heard him listening to Algerian Rai, by the end of the week I had him addicted to all things /rupture. (I've only been a successful acolyte for Doug w/ my wife).

Yaye, cumbia rebejada (I had to go into even places my wife was wary of going to get cumbia rebajada recs, as they were drug fronts)
Avatar 9:57pm
northguineahills:

Thanks, Evan, I can give you a dissertation on cumbia rebajada if you ever want, Monterrey, Mexico is the source, and where I met my wife....

Terrific show. Particularly enjoyed Los Galax, sounding very much a rhumba/soukous crossover (but going west instead of the other way). Thanks, as always, Evan
