Atlas Maior: Middle Eastern Modes Meet Jazz Improv

Hear this show now: Pop-up listen Pop-up player! | Add or read comments

Atlas Maior is an exciting band from Austin, Texas that combines Middle Eastern microtonal modality and other global influences with jazz-based improvisation.

The band celebrates the release of an excellent new album, Riptide, with its first-ever NYC shows: Tuesday night May 14th at the Brooklyn Maqam Hang at Sisters (900 Fulton St.), a wonderful bi-weekly series of concerts and jam sessions that spotlight musical styles of the Middle East and the Arab World (and beyond); and Wednesday night May 15th as part of a star-studded Rubulad event in Bushwick.

Rob met Joshua Thomson, saxophonist and co-founder of Atlas Maior on a recent visit to Austin, and you'll get to meet Joshua and hear the music on this week's show!

YEAH! Love Todd-a-phonic, but 6pm Sat. is time for TSP! But then, I might be prejudiced.
Avatar 🌍 Swag For Life Member 6:48pm Bas NL:

Hiya Rob!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:48pm Rob W:

Well thanks to Todd for hanging in there while I fought my way to the station. Katie can vouch for the fact that I actually left on time! Ah well...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:50pm Spardocus:

I assume you were hampered by all the road closures in jersey city. Sorry!
  6:51pm Zydeco Phil:

Woohoo
Avatar 🌍 Swag For Life Member 6:52pm Ken From Hyde Park:

A future marathon can fund a WFMU hoverbike to ease transportation to and from the station. That'll work great until the air is jammed with hoverbikes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:52pm Franco Twinkie:

Rob, any place worth living has suck-ass traffic it seems.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:56pm Rob Weisberg:

Yes I suppose that's true Franco Twinkie! And yes I could use that WFMU hoverbike... Spardocus, I failed to do my research, yes, that's exactly what happened. I think it was a road race and similar to the five borough bike tour in NY tomorrow which, though a wonderful thing, famously snarls traffic, the same seems to have occurred here. Well, now I know for the future, ah well...
Avatar 🌍 Swag For Life Member 6:59pm chresti:

Glad you made it Rob, we thought maybe you were talking to someone, on the way.
  7:00pm Peter from Dover NJ:

Rob, do you ever find good music from mainland China? Have I missed it? curious.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:07pm Rob W:

Peter, in terms of sort of world musicky stuff, there are things happening. A few years ago Mu Qian was a guest on my show - a young ethnomusicologist who programs the Shanghai World Music festival and other events over there. He played some of his field recordings... I also played a few Chinese bands on that show - Shanren, Hanggai (Mongolian-Chinese band based in Beijing). That show is wfmu.org... . Shanren were also guests on my show back in 2012 - www.wfmu.org... .
  7:08pm Zydeco Phil:
