Liam in Denmark:

This one’s actually pretty good
Avatar 3:50am
BronwynB:

i do believe this is an outsider musician that forgotify has kindly turned us all onto
Avatar 3:51am
BronwynB:

i dig it
  3:51am
Liam in Denmark:

It deserves at least the one listen we’re listening to right now
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:51am

Mr B was the name of my junior high P.E. coach, whom George W. Bush always reminded me of. I dig too (or three)

Hello Bronwyn and listeners
  3:55am
Liam in Denmark:

The accordion is a nice addition to the ensemble
Avatar 3:55am
BronwynB:

@liam: the funny thing about this segment is i always end up removing the songs from forgotify by listening to them on spotify to make sure they're fcc friendly before playing them on air
Avatar 3:56am
BronwynB:

@diciassette: what if your PE coach was mr b of kansas city??
Avatar 3:56am
BronwynB:

hey fred :D

I was an acquaintance of Thomas M. Disch, a science fiction writer who wrote the story “The Brave Little Toaster”. I remember its original publication, in =The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction=, and it was very different from his usual stuff. He was somewhat famous for his science fiction, and yet The Brave Little Toaster is probably what he is most famous for.

I can deal with this Mozart it's light and fruity
Avatar 4:02am
BronwynB:

@scraps: that is so cool that you knew him! now i want to read the story (and see the movie again, it's been well over 20 years)
Avatar 4:03am
BronwynB:

@diciassette: this is the famous mozart's dad! its super funny to me that he's on forgotify (although to be fair wolfgang has shown up on forgotify as well)
Avatar 4:05am
Scraps:

I worked in the science fiction publishing field, and it was a relatively small field. Disch and I lived in New York, so we ran into each other several times.

What are Spotify subscribers listening to if not this stuff?

You should have heard the way I used to say "hyper bowl" before I went to junior college
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:11am

I've never heard of the Brave little toaster. The only fictional toaster that I knew of was the talking toaster from Red Dwarf
Avatar 4:13am

Varèse! Love him. Can fit his whole music in two CDs.

sweet cheri:

good morning Bronwyn and everybody here, Bronwyn what's new? how's life been treating you, Bronwyn??
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:14am
diciassette:

The Brave Little Toaster reminds me of Broken Household Appliance National Forest by Grandaddy, or vice versa
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:15am
jkeigh:

Haha, this is the only Varese that I own scraps
Avatar 4:22am
BronwynB:

@liam: probably spotify's playlists of the top pop hits that confront me every time i open the app

well Bronwyn, let me be the first to say BEST WISHES and congarats on your new job, i'm REALLY glad for you Bronwyn!!
Avatar 4:29am

thanks cheri! :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:40am
fred:

I'm very ignorant when it comes to classical music (unless it's used in contemporary dance), so this show is a welcome primer.
Now that I think about it, it's kinda weird that I'm on friendly terms with some contemporary music composers but have never heard their music. Then again, contemporary music isn't played much, and most of the time only once
Avatar 4:42am
BronwynB:

i really should play more contemporary composers
Avatar 4:44am
BronwynB:

well, this guy is contemporary enough as he only died in 2010 and this piece is from 1991 which in classical years means it's new lol
Avatar 4:45am
BronwynB:

oops
Avatar 4:45am
BronwynB:

that pharmaceutical ad is part of the string quartet as gorecki originally intended it
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:48am
fred:

@Bronwyn: It's not that easy though: even they struggle to get recordings of their pieces, and there's not much of a market for releases. I think Columbia has a good program, and Yarn/Wire have released some recordings of some young composers there
Avatar 4:52am
BronwynB:

yes it sucks. i will check out yarn/wire- thanks!
Avatar 4:55am
Rob Gee:

Congrats on thee new job and thanks for this great show...loved the classical
Avatar 5:01am
Scraps:

Love love love Schnittke. Hate hate boring Gorecki. ;-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:02am
fred:

I think Kevin Shea from Talibam (and Gig Talk) has some ongoing project going with Yarn/Wire, so it shouldn't be hard for you to find out more about them
Avatar 5:09am
BronwynB:

thanks rob, glad you're enjoying it :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:15am
diciassette:

I loved the Schnittke too, but Gorecki didn't strike me as some kind of Amadeus or anything.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:15am
jkeigh:

You could split Feldman's string quartet no. 2 into 2 shows if you feel like being a lazy DJ for a while
Avatar 5:17am
DL in LA:

Can the DJ see who did clicky stars for songs, or just how many people clicked them? My father would have loved this choral music. Thanks!
Avatar 5:21am
BronwynB:

@jkeigh: haha nice!! i mostly avoid really long pieces but one time i played some when the show was half an hour longer due to daylight savings time (which i found out very shortly before the show...)
Avatar 5:22am
BronwynB:

@DL: yes I can see the clicky stars! i saw yours :)
  5:50am
elwyn:

maybe it's time for the WFMU app to get another update? it would be nice if it had login and starring favourites.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:51am
diciassette:

Hear hear! I have always felt the same.
Avatar 5:51am
BronwynB:

agreed, elwyn
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:53am
jkeigh:

I like this Folk Songs track, have to remember to check out the rest of the album
Avatar 5:58am
Scraps:

I don’t think I heard this Virgil Thomson. Thank you.
Avatar 5:59am
BronwynB:

no problem :) it's from the movie louisiana story of which the coolest part of the music is the intro which you can find on youtube but not on any official recordings i don't think
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:59am

Thanks Bronwyn!
