Sun. Dec 22nd, 3pm - 5pm:
The Unsolicited Return of the Winter Soul-stice (fill-in for Paul Bruno)
(More info...)
You can't stop the seasons from turning, and you evidently also can't stop an old dog from performing his one old trick. Answering the teeming clamor of one New York Times food columnist
, Gaylord Fields is returning to WFMU's airwaves for a one-off Winter Soul-stice program. In his time away he's learned nothing, so the format will remain the same: two hours of original 1960s soul 45s, and the abuse of an expensive reverb machine for the sake of corny vocal effects.
February 24, 2019: Groove/Gyrus Is in the Heart/Brain
Evening Gaylord and fellow listeners! I like the effect of this hot jazz layered on top of the howling winds outside.

Hello chersti

Carmichael:
Heya Gaylord. Had to see Queen opening the Shreiky awards. Adam Lambert is a distant 3rd in the Freddie singalike race.
8:10pm
kevlicki:
Good night Gaylord. Thanks again for sharing your experiences and insights w Kimzilla and Emily on In real Life last week. It’s necessary and healthy to hear a discussion of race politics on WFMU.
8:12pm
John from Florham Park:
I second what kevlike said thought it was very interesting
I truly do appreciate everyone's kind and understanding words about the IRL show a lot. I just hope you don't mind if you could give me the space to just concentrate on the musical task at hand. It's too heavy a subject for me to address here and now. If you'd like to follow up with me, please feel welcome to send me a note offline.
That Orchestra Harlow track reminded me of the back yard parties at our Neighbors house growing up. The parties where the entire block ended up in their back yard.
@Little Danny: You are a true connoisseur. But I already knew that.
8:21pm
kevlicki:
Pardon the intrusion. It’s the rare opportunity that I get to listen live.
Back at the farm from market and eating dinner. Bell and I were just in Cuba for two weeks on a delegation visiting farms and soaking up the sun and culture. Really amazing and complicated place. These tracks seem to capture some of those traditions
greetings grand Gaylord and the whole gang, i'm so excitd tonight, because it's pizza party night!! and I brought the pizza!! so grand Gaylord and all, what kind of toppings you guys want on your pizza???
8:24pm
John from Florham Park:
Sweet Cheri anything but anchovies

Wow and this shadow track was used in an skate video in the late 90’s, I think for Tony Hawks part in The End
"Endtroducing..." became one of my favorite albums shortly after it came out, and 23 years later (*gasp*) it's still one of my favorites. Truly brilliant.
@Gaylord: On my show last week I played a track from it, and noted during my mic break that I think Shadow is ahead of his time, and will probably still think that when I'm 80 years old. Then I impersonated myself at age 80 and said so. Time travel impersonations are now a thing.
8:33pm
zpulpa:
Greetings from a bus on its way home to Baltimore from a weekend in Brooklyn.
8:33pm
kevlicki:
Wait a minute Gaylord, Tommy Guerrero?!! More skateboard history!
Throw in some Black Heart Procession for Mario Rubacalba then Flogging Molly for some Matt Hensley...maybe Steve Caballero’s band
8:34pm
sweet cheri:
your wishes are my command, grand Gaylord and everybody, and I do hope you all enjoy everything, ohhh and I even brought soda!!!!
@kevlicki: Someone had put a skateboard deck in the giveaway pile at work. I was tempted to take it, and then I remembered the AARP card in my wallet next to my health insurance card.
@Gaylord: Aww... That's a major statement! But I can't even imagine what would make me hold your show in disdain. Even if I became hearing impaired I'd still read your playlists and think, "Now, that's a great set!"
@Uncle Michael: I have decided. I bought my train tickets and secured my stay at Hotel Glenn L. I'll be there from March 14-17 and I very much look forward to seeing you!
well grand Gaylord and gang, i'm sorry to say i must take my leave, i really hope everyone enjoyed themselves, because i sure did, and grand Gaylord, thanks much of the sweet tunes tonight!!!
What a happy reunion! Wendy and Uncle Michael both coming to town! I wonder which other far-flung correspondents will be making their way to the Magic Factory.
@khd: For sure. I don't think I've heard this since the mid-'80s. A "contemporary" standout in the FM classic rock radio barrenlands that were available to me in that time.
I've had "The Voice" in the back of my head as a song to play for months and months, and I finally found a way to make it work (because of all the baggage it carries, alas).
I am fighting a cold and am going to bed early so I will say farewell for the evening. Thanks for the fabulous music, as always, Gaylord! And a special good-night shout-out to John from Florham Park and Uncle Michael.
9:37pm
Carmichael:
Gaylord, do you mean the APP song with Steve Harley?
@katharsis: Thank you! I was building up a context for it with everything that preceded it and found the right place to slip it in — just after Angus MacLise (the man who quit the Velvet Underground before the first album because he thought they were sellouts), of all artists!
The show has been absolutely wonderful tonight Gaylord!! Thank you! My bus is just pulling to my destination and I feel like I have traveled smoothly on the road waves and the airwaves. Goodnight friends!
