How did "Jerry's World" end up in the film?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:27pm

Dolby is a form of compression. So you are listening to compressed audio that hasn't been re-expanded.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:27pm
Webhamster Henry:

Three Shingles is from Somewhere Out There, 1996.
  3:29pm
Christian Schaal:

will the film screen in LA?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:34pm
mrdonutsu:

Old school Dolby encoding boosts the high frequencies upon record and then attenuates them back down on playback. The recorded audio is returned to it's "flat" state, but the level of the high frequency tape hiss is reduced.

Why did WFMU stop airing Joe's programs?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:57pm

@AnAnonymousParty generally true, but Irwins big tribute after he died omitted the Frank material for copyright reasons.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:58pm
Webhamster Henry:

You can buy Joe Frank shows from joefrank.com.
Avatar 3:58pm
geezerette:

He really was breathtaking.
  3:59pm
Listener Robert:

Van, I'm not sure this applies universally, but he explained on WFMU ~15 years ago (during or just before spring Marathon) that he could no longer produce new shows for air -- too restrictive FCC rules on content. But conditions must've improved.
  4:01pm
Listener Robert:

Thanks to Ken Freedman for setting ALL THIS up!
  4:02pm
Brendan:

@Van, I believe it may have been out of respect for Joe’s widow and estate. Joe incurred medical costs. All of Joe’s material is available for purchase on his website. I am not sure but the actual episodes may be in the archive, with the playlist references removed. Irwin can set the record straight though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:05pm
Webhamster Henry:

If you bumped into him in the middle of the night - WNYC's AM ran it - it was extra intimate!
  4:05pm

I heard they stopped airing on WFMU because of business reasons. They have a for purchase website.

This is a great conversation / interview.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:08pm
Webhamster Henry:

National Lampoon also had a radio show.
  4:09pm
Listener Robert:

I forgot the name of the guy who did the title character of Chicken Man, but he did a lot of funny radio ads and voice-overs and had a show on WNBC (IIRC) in the 1980s. The Time magazine ads come to mind.
  4:09pm
Van:

Amazing that Irwin doesn't ask if the fil will be released onto DVD.Seems like an obvious question.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:10pm
AnAnonymousParty:

Or Netflix.
  4:11pm
Listener Robert:

One of the fun things about National Lampoon's Radio "Hour" was that it was the recording debut of Harold Ramis's Moe Green character. Joe Flaherty was Joe O'Flaherty then.
  4:13pm
Brendan:

Joe could talk over bad smooth jazz and make it sound cool.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:13pm
Ken From Hyde Park:

I was much more influenced by the Firesign Theatre.
Too bad i didn't hear Negativland's Over the Edge live on the East Coast!
  4:13pm
Listener Robert:

Henry, anything "in the middle of the night" on WNYC (AM) must've been after they switched to 820.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:14pm
Webhamster Henry:

@Robert - yes .. WNYC didn't have license to broadcast after 10PM or something like that!
  4:15pm
Van:

Dick Summers also a great storyteller.

Jonathan Goldstein did an interview with Joe Frank for Believer magazine:
believermag.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:19pm
Webhamster Henry:

@Michael/Robert .. AM especially had the problem that it propagated really far at night and tended to interfere with other stations' footprints. Read my old WFMU LCD article on border radio! www.wfmu.org...
  4:20pm
Van:

Joe had a hell of a s humor mixed with his great voice and material he remains unsurpassed.
  4:20pm
sufferwords:

I got to ‘act’ in one of the Joe Frank short films- saw him the year before he died and mentioned to him that all i remembered was standing around a coffin- he remembered me and was eager in his praise of my ‘performance’ and for a moment i felt legendary being acknowledged by a true legend
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:21pm
Webhamster Henry:

Joe's audio deadpan just adds that extra WHAT AM I LISTENING TO? to all his drama.
  4:21pm
Listener Robert:

Michael, 830 was WCCO, Minneapolis's clear channel. However, WNYC had special authorization, held over from World War 2, to stay on 2 hours after local sunset.
  4:22pm
Brendan:

Ira just described my peeve w/ (some programs on) NPR and PBS. We’re going to tell you what we’re about to tell you, we’ll tell you, then we’ll tell you what we told you. Pre chewed food for thought.

That "on trial for misogyny" segment is one of my least favorite Joe Frank episodes. It's self-indulgent. It almost reminds me (though it's much more skilled and has a sense of humor) of shitty self-published Christian sci-fi about a future liberal hellscape where the Christianity is BANNED! And if THEY catch you with a BIBLE, you'll be dragged away!!! Oh noes!

Of course "Three Shingles", OTOH, is mind-blowing and resplendent.
  4:46pm
Listener Robert:

Of course it's self-indulgent. That's part of what made it so funny.

@LR, sure. I guess I just don't "get" that specific kind of humor. It strikes me a bordering on political, and Joe Frank is rarely that to me. It's an odd episode.
