	8:17pm coelacanth∅: i was with someone who had many tricks up her sleeve in the kitchen, when called for - as i did/do, and we wanted to eat taro for the supposed health benefits; but we never did find a way to make it worthy of our tastebuds.

	8:46pm Flash Strap: I've tried kava a long time ago, may need to try it again – there's a fishy looking kava joint that opened up last year in the next town over

	8:50pm Franco Twinkie: I had something called Kao coffee in Thailand. It was a mixture of toasted seeds served cold. With an order of fried banana, perfect for tromping around in the afternoon heat!
	8:51pm Little Danny: I remember the trick with Kava was finding a reputable online vendor and preparing it oneself. I didn't know there were walk-in Kava shoppes!
	8:52pm Little Danny: If you're in the right mood this LP is one of the deepest exotica/Hawaiiana recordings out there

(if so) it was very fashionable in the "health food" industry in the 90s. people were buying "standardized" capsules for anxiety for mucho dinero. apparently it really works, but you need a lot of it in that form; and my brain & instinct tells me it'd be more effective in a more natural state than a standardized extract.

	9:15pm coelacanth∅: been reading. wikipedia says poi is not synonymous for taro but a preparation made primarily from taro, and the cooking time is hours. i think my gf and i cooked it for 20 minutes max. maybe that's why it was so starchy. also we didn't try it in any sweet preparations at all.

	9:16pm passiflora: I used to try those capsules, @coelacanth∅, either going into or coming out of work at a small mall bookstore. they didn't seem to work for me. later, I visited my friend in south florida, who was in rehab. they hung out at this dark, tropical cafe that served it in wooden bowls
	9:17pm coelacanth∅: (she made the best tempura i've ever had though, and we tempura'd everything in the refrigerator. i guess we didn't have any taro at the time.)

	9:20pm Flash Strap: the kava place near me has a kind of futuro-vapey "twisted" tiki style that I'm very wary of
	9:21pm coelacanth∅: passiflora i knew 2 rattly people who used it. one i worked with at the store so he got it wholesale, and his friend -so, same...if i remember correctly they each took at least 10 caps/day. (which at wholesale was probably close to $10./day, and maybe not too good for the liver) but they both swore it worked; and it seemed to.
	9:21pm passiflora: it enhanced the earthy taste. that nakamal shop online is what they served...there was a lot of variance of between the different types.

	9:23pm Little Danny: I remember the taste of Kava being a fairly serious barrier to entry. Hard to imagine it catching on with the vaping crowd.

	9:26pm coelacanth∅: i have always thought the isolation of the "active ingredient" in herbs/foods was bullshit. it makes sense to me that there'd be cofactors present in the plant that work together with the supposed active ingredient - that get left behind in these preparations. there may be exceptions of course, but i'd sooner try the kava drink.

	9:32pm doctorjazz: Been listening on the car, just got home. I listen on a clock radio in the office, sometimes when I listen in the car I'm struck by what beautiful sounding recordings these are. Specifically, the Johnny Pineapple was beautifully recorded stereo. The Smeck, which sounded mono to me w also a great recording!.

	9:36pm ifny: @coelacanth∅ Depends on the joint. But taro dumplings are definitely not kosher or vegetarian friendly. Often they have some kind of pork bits.
	9:38pm ifny: The best ones have the most glorious golden frilly lace all over them. I have no clue how this is achieved. Like so much of the magic I love about dim sum.

	9:39pm ifny: But everything aside from taro is secondary to the inside, which is soft and creamy. Some versions seem to have a slight Chinese curry tone.

	9:40pm ifny: They're also called 'wu gok' if that helps you track them down. I bet a vegetarian dim sum place would have a nice veg version.

(if so) it was very fashionable in the "health food" industry in the 90s. people were buying "standardized" capsules for anxiety for mucho dinero. apparently it really works, but you need a lot of it in that form; and my brain & instinct tells me it'd be more effective in a more natural state than a standardized extract.

	9:15pm coelacanth∅: been reading. wikipedia says poi is not synonymous for taro but a preparation made primarily from taro, and the cooking time is hours. i think my gf and i cooked it for 20 minutes max. maybe that's why it was so starchy. also we didn't try it in any sweet preparations at all.

(which at wholesale was probably close to $10./day, and maybe not too good for the liver) but they both swore it worked; and it seemed to.

Specifically, the Johnny Pineapple was beautifully recorded stereo. The Smeck, which sounded mono to me w also a great recording!.
