Uh oh - Dickie Goodman alert!
  3:02pm
Martinibomb:

Omfg! Otis there's a show for adults with developmental disabilities on FreeformPDX and they sing over their fave songs. But one of the guys tried to sing over a Dickie Goodman track.. I was really blown away
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:02pm
Jan Turkenburg:

I love this kind of collages. Hearing things exactly like this on Dutch radio, ignited my love for cutting and pasting.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:02pm
Otis Fodder:

Ha, that's fantastic MB. If you can find the link, can you post it here?
  3:02pm
Martinibomb:

It was really cool hearing someone try and sing a collage record
  3:03pm
Martinibomb:

I don't think they archive that show unfortunately

Martinibomb, we have spoken before about our mutual love for Full Life Radio. They used to have WFMU-style chat capabilities when they were on Radio23/Cascade Community Radio, which was fun as well.

Martinibomb, are you aware of the 180-Gs? It's an all acapella project covering Negativland's catalog.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:08pm
Otis Fodder:

Yes, 180-Gs! Super funny cool stuff.
  3:08pm
Martinibomb:

I haven't heard it but would love to of course.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:09pm
Rich in Washington:

Do they do their show live at Freeform? Like go in and do it, or is it remote?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:09pm
Rich in Washington:

The guy(s) who do it are geniuses. I've also played their project The Sursiks on your show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:10pm
Rich in Washington:

Don Joyce sent me the 180-Gs shortly after it came out. It's brilliant. I will have to get it to you somehow.
  3:10pm
Martinibomb:

They do it remote. The DJ before them gets them on air and then takes off. I think it must be an internet feed? I just joined the Full Life Radical radio page on FaceBook
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:11pm
Rich in Washington:

GOD! I remember mailing away for this cassette when I was a kid. I was so flummoxed. I didn't actually know what Muzak meant. I thought it was just a silly spelling of music.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:13pm
Rich in Washington:

Now I love it, but I just remember being so confused about this tape. it was also really cheap and the pressure pad fell off, the ink on the cassette was smudgy, like it was a grease pencil or the ink was wet.
Avatar 3:13pm
Mr Fab:

Hi Otis, hi all!
Can't believe I never thought to record "Paul Revere" backwards. I mean, I recorded a slowed-down "Chipmunk Song" after all...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:14pm
Otis Fodder:

Wow, the OG tapes of EZ. I didn't hear about the project until the early 2000s. The recent box set is a beautiful thing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:14pm
Rich in Washington:

FLRR: That's how they did it on CCR - that's how we all did our shows - remotely. I think the Full Life school is/was really close to KBOO.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:14pm
Otis Fodder:

Paul Revere sounds amazing backwards!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:15pm
Rich in Washington:

I remember that rendition of Whip It reminded me of Jack Lalane's TV show. I could imagine him hopping around in his jumpsuit to that song. If you've seen his show, you know what I mean.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:16pm
Otis Fodder:

I really enjoy how most versions on EZ, like Whip It, are only slightly reminiscent of the original.
  3:17pm
Martinibomb:

A good friend works for Devo. Even played bass on their last tour.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:17pm
Jan Turkenburg:

one of the coolest renditions of Caravan I know sofar
Avatar 3:17pm
Mr Fab:

Otis, you never bought any Devo albums? The blurb for the EZ tape was in their 'Club Devo' ads that came in their record packaging. Hilarious reading.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:17pm
Otis Fodder:

Yes! One of my favs by Vinnie!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:18pm
Rich in Washington:

Yeah. Devo was so screwed by their contract that they tried to make money with their fan club items/merch. They could only merchandize certain things, apparently. The catalog was really OG punk/guerilla looking, because they paid for it out of pocket - and I would imagine the merch was also suitably cheap. The cassette was in a paper carton, really cheaply made. I sold it to a fanboy years and years ago, but now I wish I still had it for some reason.
Avatar 3:19pm
AdamOooh:

If you had listed this as the Bran Flakes version of Caravan I would have believed it easily. That groove...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:19pm
Rich in Washington:

I love Beautiful World for its Optigan loop.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:19pm
Otis Fodder:

Ha. Hey Adam O!
Avatar 3:20pm
Mr Fab:

I can still quote those 'Club Devo' blurbs, like how the EZ tape "captures Devo in a rare "mellow" mood." The description for the radiation suits they sold said: "Keep cool during meltdowns!"
  3:22pm
Fortyone:

Howdy!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:22pm

Ha! That's great, Fab! Sounds right to me! I should look to see if I still have my catalog.

I think Trailer Park Records or some similar outfit put out a CD or two called Cashed In, which was all Johnny Cash soundalikes.

My father had a CB in his '73 ragtop Cougar... stolen about 3 times.

I have one of the singing lunberjacks' albums, he does a pretty good Johnny too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:50pm

I did have a multichannel Walky Talky on, as a FM pirate station, recieving reuqests from CB-people in the neighbourhood. I played a lot of my Shadows-cassettes :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:50pm
Rich in Washington:

We would also take one CB receiver and feed the signal through a digital delay and send it out over another CB. That too was fun.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:50pm
Otis Fodder:

Had to play both sides of this Johnny Sea 7". One of my favorite recent finds.

That Johnny Sea was amazing!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:54pm
Rich in Washington:

CB radio was weird in the 90s. A few friends and I got into it for giggles. It was mainly populated by the kind of people who now troll civil rights events, etc. Just garbagy tweaker type people who had nothing better to do than start fights with people and actually try to track them down via their signal strength meters.

this just might be my new fave Roger Roger track

I know, that Roger Roger cut is a wild one from him. Hi Blair!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:57pm

It was fun for short while in the late 1970s overhere, that's what I remember. I don't feel any urge to join the club that seems to be on CB nowadays

Know how I'm catching up with the '90s? CDs. They're worthless now. Check your local thrift store.
  4:11pm

@Otis once 2010 hit it occurred to me that I should be saying "twenty" for 2000-2009 just like we all say "nineteen" for 1900-1909 etc... but yeah I'll harp on it until you want to break my face! Nah...

Oh, I know, Fab! It's sort of like the 80s era of used vinyl. There's this fresh wave of people dumping their CDs. I'm finding lots of cool stuff I've always wanted to buy, but didn't wanna drop full price on 'em.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:13pm

And I still dig CDs, as both my home setup and the radio station I DJ at are really set up for CDs as well as records.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:14pm

And so much good stuff that only came out on CD in the 90s.
  4:14pm
Fortyone:

Always pick up a CD or VHS tape when I'm out buying records... well not always but. CDs are fun

I admit I am a CD hater. I hate that the art is sooooo small. I wish they were bigger like 7" or something
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:18pm

Lots of Punk and Alternative stuff came out in the early 90s, like a whole LP with contemporaneous EP/single stuck on. I loved those, like twofer albums.
  4:18pm

but they have the cool little booklets...

Rich in Washington:

Speaking of which, I need to work on both mastering my premium CD and the artwork this weekend.
  4:21pm
Martinibomb:

I've done tons of CD art for musicians and it sucks compared to doing LP art
Avatar 4:21pm
Mr Fab:

Remember Rich you don't have to make an actual CD. Just send em the tracks/artwork. The WFMU elves do the actual manufacturing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:21pm
Otis Fodder:

I have purged a majority of my CDs, ripping them. However, I keep custom-made CDRs, those with special packaging, or ones that hold sentimental value of some sorts, like something a good friend passed me.

Martinibomb:

@Fab can you send them a folder with WAV files or an ISO that they would burn?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:23pm
Otis Fodder:

Pop music from Saturn.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:23pm
Jan Turkenburg:

LOL

I'm thinking CD image is the best thing to upload for them

come to my pair a dice, and roll them...
Avatar 4:31pm
Mr Fab:

Martinibomb, i don't see any specs re those questions. The WFMU wiki just says "you must burn your master CD at a very SLOW burn speed (8x or 16x). Your CD master should be NO LONGER THAN 75 MIN."
  4:32pm
Martinibomb:

@fab I just emailed Michele asking about uploading CD images etc.. I'll let everyone know what she says

RIAA stood for something dif every time: "Recording Industries Are Archaic," "Robotic Intergalactic Astro-Artists," "Reality Is An Accident", "Risque, Illicit and Adult"...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:35pm
Otis Fodder:

And I added, "Really Incredible Acrobatic Animals"!
Avatar 4:35pm

I should have asked you to come up with the names!

Perhaps I'm a heretic, but I like Christopher Young's Hellraiser soundtrack better than Coil's.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:48pm

Hard to pick a favorite between the two. I'm more Coil and still long for the 10: one day.

Beautiful show, thanks Otis!

Gonna drive home now before we're buried by feet of snow. Hopefully won't miss too much while listening on my phpne while I drive! Later!

I found "Message Your Mate" on cassette. You should massage your cat!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:01pm

Cheers Rich! I'll be out tonight after my show so will be catching your show + Don's tomorrow.

Up there with the creepiest kid's record songs i've heard...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:05pm

BC - Totally, and it would have a cute illustrated/photo zine of how to pet your pets with love. Totally innocent. I'm contemplating this now!!
  5:06pm
Martinibomb:

@Fab I just heard back from Michelle yup she wants hard copies mailed. Better let GG know I think she was planning to upload wav or something
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:06pm
Otis Fodder:

Yes, Adam, totally. After I recorded the Hap Palmer song, the record went to Oliver. Ha ha. Always purging!
Avatar 5:07pm
Mr Fab:

Really?! Coulda sworn you all only had to send a file of mp3s
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:08pm
Otis Fodder:

FAB/MB - We have to send a hard copy CDR. Artwork submitted digitally. Let's start a thread in the FB Clubhouse.
  5:09pm
Fortyone:

I love and have many Hap Palmer records, and loved to juxtapose and out-of-context use songs like that in my day- now I no longer do! hmm this house of grass is nice...
  5:10pm
Martinibomb:

Yup Hardcopy CDR but can email Art
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:10pm
Otis Fodder:

Fortyone - I also do much less of that too, in an obscene manner. Maybe it's age, but I get more innocent with collage work as the years pass. Boring old man.

the great "Technicolor Paradise" albums were comped by WFMU's own DJ Little Danny, host of "Cool Blue Flame" on the Drummer stream

Yes! That Numero box set is amazing. All 3 albums. Highly recommend it and it can be streamed online in many places. The LP box set is a dream.
  5:15pm
Fortyone:

@Otis yes, happens with age and I don't know- and then in my case with my Faith added in too... but I can still laugh and be silly and have fun so hey! That was some funky drums... this one sounds nice, ha!
  5:18pm
Martinibomb:

@41 does your faith influence your work?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:18pm
Otis Fodder:

Thanks Adam. Feel like now, 3 months into the show, I'm finally feeling the groove of the gear and flow of the tunes, like on this show. Ebbing and flowing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:19pm
Otis Fodder:

Fortyone - I have a ton of great 70s Jesus Rock I love. Larry Norman's first album is still an all time fav!
  5:20pm
Fortyone:

@MB it has definitely, since being Born again all of my albums since have been different- mainly in the absence of sex jokes/perversion and the absence of zen/taoist type stuff that was always a large part of my stuff. And then also in less obvious ways but yes definitely
  5:21pm
Fortyone:

@Otis, ah, not familiar with that but will check it out!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:23pm
Otis Fodder:

Fortyone - Album is Larry Norman - Upon This Rock. 1970. With the cut that has been covered a billion times, "I wish we'd all been ready". Killer song.
  5:24pm
Martinibomb:

@Fab i think my niece is recording Queen's Break Free for Medium Cool
Avatar 5:27pm

Awright! Everyone should check the archives of Martinibomb's show from last Wed to hear Martini-niece's vocal stylings.
Avatar 5:29pm

"my albums since have been different- mainly in the absence of sex jokes/perversion" - will have to go thru my stack of old Frtyone CDs to find that stuff, bwa ha ha ha!

Ever see any of Bert Tenzer's directed films like "2000 Years Later?" I only own the lobby cards for it.
  5:34pm
Fortyone:

#Don-O, yep, still at 41music.net still with my late '90s style website haha
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:34pm
Otis Fodder:

Bert Tenzer is a goldmine, of samples.

No, never have seen the films. I actually just passed 4 LPs (including this one) to a friend. I have about 14 of Tenzer's recordings here. But I purge vinyl a lot.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:40pm

  5:42pm

Well, only if he doesn't care about it much. I'll probably come across it someday I hope. Tenzer is always on my radar. Let me know about other purges. I'll pay for shipping etc :)

  5:48pm

Thanks Otis :) I need to send you my MP3 for your March show, another new outsider DIY discovery from Maryland that somehow ended up in a thrift store here in Ogden.
