The cicadas and crickets just started chirping (almost to a white noise level), so, I turned off my speakers as I thought they were becoming miswired. (and then there are insects here, in this recording as well)2.

weather today was deceptive. i wanted to start pruning things but it'd be a mistake for most plants. (i could do the hollies at least)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:02pm

I find the wild temperature fluctuations discombobulating, messes with my sense of time.

We've had +/- 70 degree temperature swings in the past few days. Crazy.

Hello!
Avatar 8:08pm
redkayak:

@coelacanth - - winter is a good time to prune deciduous plants. At least here in the midwest. Easier to see branches & such.
Avatar 8:10pm
Jesse Kaminsky:

hey chresti!
Avatar 8:12pm
northguineahills:

70 degrees F is the whole temp swing all year around here. Finally down to 67F/20C.
Avatar 8:16pm
redkayak:

@NGH - We are living in peculiar climatic times....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:18pm
coelacanth∅:

redkayak -for sure; but some things can get seriously damaged if open wounds end up getting weeks of sub-0. (i'm in the northeast) the plum blossoms, apples, dogwoods, etc. i have to try to do all within a small window in late winter, or i take a chance. (at least this is what my research has told me. i haven't actually tested this myself)
Avatar 8:20pm
northguineahills:

Tarosov, new to me, and digdug (of course, anything on Sanko Recs would be) If I remember right, Sanko is Finnish for sound.

Here in FL, it may get down to 25F/-4C and up to 100F/38C. Although, it's been as low as 7F/-14C and as high as 105F/40C

Hey Uncle Michael!
@northguinehills, he has a huge body of work, was in the Ganelin Trio for years and made some pretty cool records with Andrew Cyrille, Braxton, many others.. mainly in the free jazz idiom that I'm familiar with

I saw him almost a decade ago at the Lincoln Center (?) small spaces. (across the street from the main campus). Even longer ago, caught a bit of him at the Kitchen.

redkayak i love it though! unfortunately it's not my property...but at least i get to take care of it.
-and actually i could prune a lot of these plants by the end of february. apples can take the freeze, to some degree; but last year a tree service came in for the apples in mid-feb (3 out of the 4 are too high for me to reach) and we ended up with no apples at all.
i plan to do the hollies and get a start on the forsythia tomorrow. they can take it.
Avatar 8:53pm
redkayak:

@coelacanth - Lucky you! I have some big time garden work to do this spring. We want to dig up and expand some flower beds that are long overdue. I can't wait to get back into it again

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:10pm
coelacanth∅:

redkayak are crepe myrtles a natural thing in your area, or are they more of a southern thing? we have 2 here and they die back completely, like an herb, then later than everything else they start budding; but by august they're incredible! they'll never be as big as down south, but they're very rewarding anyway.
-curious how they do elsewhere.
Avatar 9:16pm
redkayak:

@coelacanth - Nope - never seen one around here (IL/WI etc). Even the Missouri Botanical Garden website sez they die to the ground down *there* even!
Avatar 9:18pm
redkayak:

Last week here (Chicago area) we had -25 degrees. As cold as it has been in many years. Will be curious to see what the impacts were this spring...

really...missouri? i guess we've been lucky with these.
...yeah last winter was brutal here. not -25 (speaking of Yikes!) but between -10 and +5 for weeks (6?) the roses took it hard, of course; and a few things didn't pull through.
Avatar 9:30pm

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:43pm

the first spring after planting them the year prior i almost dug them up in june because they still looked dead! i decided to wait a few more weeks and Voila! nearly microscopic buds!
gave them some food and by late august they were astoundingly beautiful in appearance and aroma.
