July 22, 2003: Robot or Wolfman?

Artist Track Album Comments New
I was at Long Beach Island all weekend, sitting on the beach, reading this, which was OK, and then this, which was better. Although I grew up being exposed to plenty of beach culture (I am from New Jersey, after all...), I have to say that it still weirds me out to some extent. Imagine: an entire lifestyle based wholly on fried foods, waiting in line, and getting sand in your shorts. Amazing.
We stayed at a little motel way down at the end of the island, which is much more mellow than the places right in the thick of town, although ever since I was a little kid, I have always wanted to see what the inside of Wida's Hotel & Restaurant is like. It's a gargantuan, old-timey hotel right on the main drag that for years has had the same marquee up advertising "The Mike Byrne Show," which seems to attract a lot of old Irish folks. Actually, WFMU uber-listener/volunteer Shannon O. once told me that she'd seen the Mike Byrne show when she was a kid, which impressed me plenty. Maybe next year...

Egg Hunt  Me & You   7"  With Ian MacKaye (Minor Threat, Fugazi, Embrace) and Jeff Nelson (Minor Threat, 3, High Back Chairs)
Gang Starr  Ex Girl to Next Girl   Daily Operation
Ralph Myerz and the Jack Herren Band  A Special Morning   A Special Album  Last night while on my way to meet a friend, I noticed that the oft-heard squealing of the PATH Trains lumbering through the tunnels between Jersey City and Manhattan sounds eerily like the whistling part of this song.
Idaho  Creep   The Palms E.P.
Death of Samantha  Simple as That   7"
Marching Girls  First in Line   7"
Mr. Quintron (w/MC Trachiotomy)  I'm Not Busy   Are You Ready for an Organ Solo?  In the event that you missed it, MC Trachiotomy performed live on my show last year, back when I was holding down the Saturday late-night shift. You can hear the archive of his (STELLAR) performance right here.  *

Dr. Know  Watch in Burn   7"  OK, smartypants... Everybody and their mother called or emailed to tell me that the singer of Dr. Know -- whom I had assumed were completely forgotten about -- was more recently a member of the re-activated Dead Kennedys. (Insert comment regarding absurdity of DK reuniting without Jello Biafra here.) I will deduct appropriate number of punk points for this embarrassing error on my part. My sincere apologies.
Michael Yonkers  Kill the Enemy   Microminiature Love  re-issue  *
The Prodigal  You Got Me   Hipsville 29 B.C.  compilation

Big Heavy Stuff  White Flag   7"
Sole  Plutonium   Selling Live Water
Duh  Transformer   Blowhard  I've always been fascinated by this band for a reason I can't identify. I think it might be the name, or possibly the name of their other album ("The Unholy Handjob") which WFMU, quite tragically, does not have in its record library.
Killdozer  Nasty   7"  It's still funny once every five years. Which means that if I play it again any time before summer of 2008, I will have several words to eat.

Look out, your boss is coming.
