Maybe not such a bad thing, chresti. It was a little, let's say "unsettling."
  10:50am Dean:

Billboard magazine from May 14, 1949, includes a sidebar headed, "Burp Concerto," but it recounts how a radio announcer promising listeners that they were about to hear "the finest [classical] music known to man" was then followed by the Pepsi Cola jingle.

Due to bad OCR work, two titles scanned at HathiTrust referring to one or another of Bach's Brandenburg Concertos read "-burg" as "burp."

It was contrasted with "meatspace," the implication being that meatspace is palpable, tangible, virtual space not so much. But you learn real fast when pulling Ethernet or fiber, and setting up routers, switches, and firewalls, just how non-virtual is this brave new-ish world.

Doug, we've been watching my poor sister-in-law slowly lose her short term memory over the last few years. When we saw her the other day, she was at the point where she wasn't sure who we were (me, Bill, his brother or my other sister-in-law). But her childhood memories so far are still intact. She's got the early onset dementia. It's extremely heartbreaking.

I like to rhyme "airport" with "cut your hair short," and "clambake" with "hambone."

You can say that again, @chresti. I'm preparing to move my mother from Southern California to a senior living site near me. For a 91YO, she is doing relatively well, "high functioning," as a geriatric specialist once remarked to me. Still, cognition and memory decline, sometimes gradually, sometimes precipitously, and sometimes the results are not heartbreaking, but hilarious. For instance, not long ago she referred to my kids, Olivia and Sebastian, as Loretta and Sinbad. I mean, that's gold!

@Brian: The only faux meat I eat is Trader Joe's chorizo, as it's better then the real thing. I'll eat veggie burgers if they're not try to be ground cow. I'm an omnivore, btw.

@Maggie B the embedded memory seems to survive.
I sympathise, my Mum had the same. I used to come out from seeing her potentially more confused than her. The confusion is consistantly inconsistant.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:38am Maggie B.:

@ Brian in UK, yes, I hear that! Ironically, my mother-in-law, who'll be 93 on New Years Eve, mostly has all her marbles. She's a total gem.

@Brian: crabby I see ?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:40am Doug Schulkind:

Long into my father's memory, when his short-term memory was shot, he could regale me with stories from his very early childhood. Like traveling around northern New Jersey with his uncle who sold ladies underwear from a horse-draw buggy. That was in the early 1920s.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:40am Brian in UK:

I would eat more fish if there was a decent fishmongers near us. Supermarkets have decimated butchers, greengrocers and fishmongers over here. The trouble is that they heve not included quality in their domination.
  11:40am JtotheK:

Hi Doug, hi everyone! Sneaking in to say I really enjoyed that Mark Rice track! (Now then, back to work meeting ...)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:41am Jeff Golick:

Quality is not part of the disruption promise/premise, @Brian. Only "convenience."

@maggie, it helps to show her a photograph, I would show my dad a photo of my son and his partner to remind him that they were not there to steal everything

I'll never forgive that jerk Bezos for smothering the real Amazon Bookstore.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:44am Brian in UK:

@Jeff I appreciate, what really gets my goat is that you have to buy the volume they want to sell in their plastic wrappers.
Lord Buckley summed it up way back in 1959 on 'Supermarket'
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:44am Sem:

Cannot complain about fish here I live. Only off the boats, never from the supermarkets. Rural coastal Nova Scotia has it's delights, and decent seafood year-round is one of them.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:44am Maggie B.:

Avatar 11:47am northguineahills:

Thankfully, we still have farmers markets, local graocers, and fishmongers o'er here. Supermarkets dominate, but, if you know where to look, you'll find the right stuff....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:47am Doug Schulkind:

Or we could just call you Scott, Listener Gregory.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:47am Parq:

Thank goodness for all those old Looney Tunes, so we have throat spritzers as a pop culture reference in the 21st century. I just mentioned one yesterday. And yes, that is one adorable kid.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:47am Franco Twinkie:

Doug, We are in the process of intergrating in home help for my mother. Some times she is resigned to the fact that she can no longer be left alone to prepare food and take care of other daily functions. Today I will go over to oversee the transition. It could go well, or be fraught will all kinds of sabotage. We are just at the beginning of the up hill climb.
  11:48am rw:

Dean, I just threw out an Amazon travel mug from when Amazon was a bookstore. Loved that thing as a reminder of an era past but it started leaking and some things you just can't keep.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:48am Sem:

Oh, did I mention the mussels? Plump, briny, sublime. Grit-less, BiUK. GRIT-LESS.

My mom has had in-home care for several years now. It was difficult at first, with issues of trust, privacy, and personality differences causing a lot of tension and uncooperative behavior. But by now her regular weekday care giver is a real source of support, care, and friendship.
