At the risk of social ostracism and with apologies to Fabio:

They're not mill towns anymore and unless they are stops on the antiquer's highway then most large towns in central New England are drug-riddled ghost towns. Pittsfield, Worcester, Springfield, Holyoke, Brattleboro, Watertown. I'm being anecdotal and maybe a bit facetious, but I stand by this. My family is still up there. I was up there last week.

Avatar 3:15pm
Wild Neil||Peace All:

@Crateslinger-you are describing most of the small towns along route 5/20 in NY. They have quaint looking downtowns but they are far far far away from being a cutesy cool downtown with lovely nice diners and cool cafes. They are just run-down places that are really kind of no fun whatsoever. Hackettstown NJ is a booming metropolis in comparison to these places. Everybody moved to the suburbs.

A Long, long, LONG time ago. It's not the 60's anymore, that was their heyday. Only College towns can make these successful, and even the area around University of Buffalo South is pretty much a failure. The Elmwood Strip near Buff State is thriving. That's about it for college-towny areas around Buffalo.

Kunstler is cranky - but scary . I think we'll be busy dealing with climate issues which will hit before the peak oil crisis. His rants are kind of predictable, but reasonable in a legal sense. And I like his architecture criticism.

@ Polyus: Yes, I saw it and I felt the same way. It's not a "good" movie, with a lot of plot issues and things that just don't work. But I liked Tilda Swinton (always great) and the cinematography and sets and choreography were all excellent, but it left me cold in the end. The big dance satanic ritual scene towards the end was fantastic visually, with the exception of the "monster" demon witch or whatever that fat hideous thing was supoposed to be, but it wasn't scary or even creepy -- which is what you should be getting from Suspiria! and the political asides from radio and TV that were supposed to make some sort of connections -- to what exactly?) were basically useless...
