Hullo fellow bunny.
Watching 'Little Girl Blue' on AmericanMasters...it's too much for me almost. Too close to home personally for me - to be a Creative type who never will feel validated or socially complete nonetheless. To be totally frank.
Harm Reduction works - Prohibition does not. These are the plain, demonstrable facts.
As for Race - the PrisonIndustrial Complex is the new Jim Crow - no question. & now - White people will be invested in to grow cannabis by the same establishment! BilieHoliday was killed by Hoover's drug nazis.
To be a Class A drug - the Law is it cannot have *any* positive Medical benefit. Putting cannabis in this category is increasingly contradictory.

One, two, three, one, two, three, drink

Like it doesn't exist
I'm gonna fly like a bird through the night, feel my tears as they dry
I'm gonna swing from the chandelier, from the chandelier
And I'm holding on for dear life, won't look down won't open my eyes
Keep my glass full until morning light, 'cause I'm just holding on for tonight
Help me, I'm holding on for dear life, won't look down won't open my eyes
Keep my glass full until morning light, 'cause I'm just holding on for tonight

No Sheila. It’s ok. Be brave or nothing at all.

Drugs do work, until they don’t work anymore.

The opposite of addiction is definitely connection.

‘I get drunk. We recover’
  5:37pm
Jocelyn:

Also controversial but when I quit cigarettes years ago I made the connection that for me it was less about the cigarette than it was the time out that the cigarette breaks gave me. I had to work on my coping mechanisms.

Here is an NPR piece on the Vietnam veteran studies I mentioned. Good read on a few levels. Like this discussion on habits and behaviors, “And over time those cues become so deeply ingrained that they are very hard to resist. And so we smoke at the entrance to work when we don't want to. We sit on the couch and eat ice cream when we don't need to, despite our best intentions, despite our resolutions.” www.npr.org...

I quit smoking briefly before heart surgery. The religion-heavy anti-smoking message I got at the hospital made me take up the habit again. I told them it rubbed me the wrong way, they just said I needed to trust in a higher power. Bought a pack the day I was out

I started smoking at 16, quit at 22. Didn't touch them for over 3 years. Since then, I've had maybe one a month at party or concert scenarios.

So much about drugs is about the vortex of self as a social being & having things to pivot around socially. I need a job at parties. I can't just drift. It's the curse of consciousness.

@Michael 98145: It's really dumb though. I had kicked it for a while, even today I don't smoke during the day. But the "higher power" talk really got under my skin

JakeGould:

Oh also, I kinda hate drinking to drink nowadays. I have no problem getting socially drunk every now and then. But this cultural mentality that you MUST drink if you socialize is a bit crazy.

I’ve known people who can’t see movies unless they are high or drunk. Ditto with bands. And honestly, I am not 19 anymore so why do I have to do that to enjoy something?

Sometimes for some people it’s just hard to say, “I like something because I like it…” and without some social lubricant involved.

One older timer in a room once said that the higher power stuff got to him too until someone told him just to substitute "the radiator" every time he said higher power. That worked for him. I realized my hang up on that was just me getting in my way again. I realized it with help. My best friend had issues with the higher power stuff too, & he's dead now. I wish he could've gotten out of his own way.

the glowing one:

@JakeGould: same... I don't like how alcohol makes me stupid. It slows my thinking down (alcohol slows inhibits the firing of neurons), which I don't like in social settings. I don't even get more sociable when drunk, how would I when I need that processing power to emphasize... studies have shown that alcohol doesn't increase empathy, it only creates the illusion the other people agree with you, while in fact they don't.

I also don't like smoking weed anymore, it shuts down all critical thinking. In retrospect that makes so much sense that I started to believe all kinds of stupid theories when in my stoner days.

I avoid drugs as much as I can. But I'm for decriminalizing all drug use and for legalizing and regulating many recreational drugs, since I pretty much agree with the argument that the current war on drugs has failed. Personally though, drugs are not a solution to me. Drug abuse is an indicator that someone is coping with certain situations in an unhealthy manner.

Love this show and really appreciate the theme. Food issues also tie together the drug-related deaths of Karen Carpenter and Dinah Washington. I imagine for other women on this list as well, drug and alcohol abuse may have been intertwined with shame associated with body trauma - but KC and DW's jump out at me most readily. A poignant reminder of how body dysmorphia can be fatal.
