Favoriting June 18, 2018: John Keating, director, "Gamechangers: Dreams of Blizzcon"

Listen to this show: Pop-up listen Pop-up player!

This week: John Keating, director of the new esports documentary, "Gamechangers: Dreams of Blizzcon":

Gamechangersdocumentary.com, the film website

@GamechangersDoc on Twitter

Not in tech news, but...

Laura Bush on what's happening on the border: "I appreciate the need to enforce and protect our international boundaries, but this zero-tolerance policy is cruel. It is immoral. And it breaks my heart. . . . These images are eerily reminiscent of the Japanese American internment camps of World War II, now considered to have been one of the most shameful episodes in U.S. history."

Now on to recent tech news:

World Health Organization adds gaming disorder to disease classifications: "The WHO on Monday proposed adding gaming disorder to its new comprehensive manual of disease classifications, raising an immediate debate over whether it merits a separate designation."

• In response to a CNBC story that people are switching from Facebook to Instagram and Whatsapp, Paris Martineau writes: "facebook is instagram and whatsapp facebook is instagram and whatsapp ..."

• Update on "building a surveillance state": Amazon shareholders call for halt of facial recognition sales to police.

• On that same topic: Prison bus or rental car shuttle? You make the call, below.

Break Up Google, says the Boston Globe: "Never in the history of the world has a single company had so much control over what people know and think . . . [and] Google’s power is bound to grow still more. Last year, it spent more on federal lobbying than any other company. By tweaking the way information appears on search pages, Google can already promote its own websites and banish competitors to digital oblivion."

• Our friends at WFMU's In Real Life shared this video of an 8-year-old drumming to Led Zeppelin. There's hope in the next generation!

• Finally: how gaming used to be...

(oh, the commentboard is open?!) as GAMECHANGER is a common term used (tho not as much as in past), i'm not a fan of it. but i'm just being a curmudgeon, i apoloize. ---- did i read that NKorea has a whole buncha kids playing video games, making money for the state, and that money being used to...or am i dreaming. maybe Pres* Trump and Kim Jong-Un discussed this.

Diagnosis aren't diseases as such, I think. More like a definition. So that if someone comes into the office and says "I'm ruining my life due to excessive time spent on computer games", we have an agreed-to standard definition of what that means. I think this is a good thing. We should probably investigate social media and it's predatory attention-grabbing practices in the same fashion.

slot machines arent particularly 'fun' or great works of art but they get people hooked regardless. neuromarketing/behavioral economics are huge area of r+d in game development. its a huge market and ultimately under capitalism the bottom line is profit extraction. young and unsupervised minds are much more maleable than adults. regulation is miles behind these technologies and techniques.
