Ukrainian Village Voices: Luminous Choral Polyphony

Hear this show now: Pop-up listen Pop-up player! | Add or read comments

Ukraine has a great tradition of polylphonic group singing. New York's Ukrainian Village Voices is a vibrant choral ensemble dedicated to keeping those traditions alive.

You can hear and download the band’s brand new self-titled debut album (on Brooklyn's esteemed Jalopy Records label) at https://ukrainianvillagevoices.bandcamp.com/.

Ukrainian Village Voices celebrates the album release by performing at the Saint George Ukrainian Festival at Saint George Ukrainian Catholic Church, 30 E 7th St in the East Village on Friday night May 18th. And, the official Ukrainian Village Voices record release concert - with fellow NYC / East European rooted ensembles Cheres and Supruli - is on Sunday June 3rd at the St. George Academy at 215 E 6th St.

The group also invites musicians from near and far to lead public vocal workshops. The next workshop - From Polissia to Poltava - with Shelley Thomas of Black Sea Hotel - is tomorrow (Sunday afternoon May 6th) at 3:30 at Playwrights Rehearsal Studios, Room 3G 440 Lafayette St (near Astor Place) in lower Manhattan.

But first, experience Ukrainian Village Voices and these rich ancient traditions live on WFMU!

About the artists:

Canada's celebrated Inuk performer Tanya Tagaq employs exquisite, unnerving vocal improvisations that blend vocal techniques from metal, rock, improvisational and new music worlds with elements of Inuit throat singing. Tanya’s heritage is never far from her mind, and it has a political edge (growing up in a majority Inuit area, Tanya saw the effects of Canadian attempts to systematically dismantle Inuit culture). Tagaq’s art challenges static ideas of genre and culture and contends with themes of environmentalism, human rights, and colonialism.

In their collaboration, Eva Salina & Peter Stan pick up and continue an interrupted legacy of empowered female voices in Balkan Romani (gypsy) music. Amplifying voices of past generations of Romani women musicians, Eva & Peter employ tenderness, grace, passion and a commitment to keeping these songs alive and evolving, while inspiring and teaching young people in the Balkans & Balkan diaspora to participate in living traditions.

Thanks for putting up all of the immigration links. My wife and I just went through our fourth and (should be) last immigration interview. Thankfully, we could afford a decent lawyer, most can not. What used to be a 30 minute rubber stamp affair became a bizarre kafka-esque sequence where we had to ask our insurers, banks, and employers for docs they didn't usually have. So, what was a routine 30 minute process, it took them 6 weeks to process. Next year, she's eligible to start her citizen process (she's a bit sour on the idea, now).

Gracias, Smilty69 y Rob W, We've been together for 11 years, but we waited to get married four years ago b/c we knew it would be a shit show (and that was back in the Obama years). Then, life happened (we both lost our permanent jobs w/in months of each other, she got cancer, we paid out of pocket, she's healthy [thank Chthulu], our rent went up), and I got an offer to start a dream job last year doing an environmental science startup job in FL. She got a job at the same time to be one of the lead teams designing Obama's Presidential Library, so, she didn't come w/ me (obviously). Then in Feb, the new DHS regulations for visas came down, and we felt tre fucked. Since she is Mexican, and we don't live together right now, and we don't have kids or own property together, we had go through all of the new hoops. We're relieved all is good for the next year, but the uncertainty is driving us insane.

Digging this Ukrainian Village Voices, dyakuyu!

Cinco de Mayo isn't celebrated in Mexico. Although the attempt of Maximilian (Habsburg) attempted to become Emperor of Mexico, it didn't end well for him. It was only in the late 60s that Corona (and later other "Mexican" establisments in the EEUU started to market the holiday. (maybe b/c it's after May Day and not so commie???) Soon, other Mexican cerveza brands started to market it, y then tequiles y mezcales brands and by the 90s, most bars....

My wife still is wtf??! about May 5th.
Avatar 8:25pm northguineahills:

@Stashu: You know Ranchero (Mexi music w/ accordions that has lineage from polka) comes from German and Polish immigrants to northern Mexico?
