This week: Henry Lowengard, aka Webhamster Henry, on tech at WFMU and beyond.

Pointers to Webhamster Henry's work:

• Henry's Droneo app for iOS

• Henry's Yes Session iOS app

• The AUMI iOS app (as Henry says, this is for disabled people, "temporarily abled" people, as well as birds, cats, goldfish, turtles, clouds, fire) - see also aumiapp.com - AUMI stands for Adaptive Use Musical Instruments, associated with the Deep Listening Institute, which says the "Adaptive Use Musical Instruments (AUMI) software interface enables people who have very limited controlled (voluntary) movement to independently engage in music making. The Adaptive Use Musical Instruments software interface enables the user to play sounds and musical phrases through movement and gestures." Here's a video demo of AUMI.

• Henry's Only A iOS app and the Only A repository Henry mentions in the interview. (And all of Henry's iOS apps.)

• Here's a video profile of Henry Lowengard by MX Creatives. "He uses sound to create digital apps which allow persons with diverse physical abilities to make music."

Henry's drones on Soundcloud (scroll down to see "Swoopster at Kingston, NY" - made by the Droneo app)

• Pauline Oliveros, composer - here's her NYT obit: Composer Who Championed ‘Deep Listening’

• A selection of Henry's mp3s

• Henry's homepage and his more general website.

• And about our outtro tonight, Not Programmed for Love - Henry used to be guest host on the "Nitecaps" show (1AM-3AM) and used this as his theme song.

Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak deleted his Facebook account. You should, too: deletefacebook.com

Why Zuckerberg’s 14-Year Apology Tour Hasn’t Fixed Facebook: "Facebook’s 2 billion users are not Facebook’s 'community.' They are its user base, and they have been repeatedly carried along by the decisions of the one person who controls the platform."

“We Had To Stop Facebook”: When Anti-Muslim Violence Goes Viral. "Extremists in Sri Lanka used Facebook to organize deadly violence against Muslims. Facebook is accused of not doing enough to prevent it," reports BuzzFeed - by Megha Rajagopalan.

Richard Stallman, president of the Free Software Foundation: "The surveillance imposed on us today far exceeds that of the Soviet Union. For freedom and democracy’s sake, we need to eliminate most of it."

Facebook sent a doctor on a secret mission to ask hospitals to share patient data: "Facebook was in talks with top hospitals and other medical groups as recently as last month about a proposal to share data about the social networks of their most vulnerable patients. The idea was to build profiles of people that included their medical conditions, information that health systems have, as well as social and economic factors gleaned from Facebook."

YouTube Is Improperly Collecting Children’s Data, Consumer Groups Say: remember that Google, too, not just Facebook, is conducting surveillance of you (and your kids).

How to scam a Gmail user: "The dots [in the email address] do matter," writes James H. Fisher.

• Harvard postdoc Moira Weigel posts: "*walking by my old dorm room in Kirkland House* hey remember that time some boys hacked our college directory, put our faces up on a website so other boys could rate if we were pretty, and then became the richest people in the world?"

• ...Weigel then adds: "a global empire built on the faces of awkward teen girls what could possibly go wrong"

Geoffrey Fowler: "It’s really amazing that Facebook continues to downplay this even during the apology tour." He's referring to Drew Harwell's comment: "When Zuckerberg says third-party companies were 'able to access some information' about users' friends (see WaPo piece), this is what he actually means: Location, romantic partner, work history, interests, photos, notes, videos (and much more!)"

• MIT researchers have found that Lies spread faster than the truth.

I programmed a DOS script that chained to a WordPerfect script to download all my new content from the echos I was interested in, plus my Echomail, so I could read offline to save time dialed-in, which counted against my quota at the BBS, and also tied up my phone line -- with call waiting disabled so as not to knock off my connection. IIRC I even programmed in the DOS script a command to the modem dialer to send the code to turn off call waiting, then turn it on again at the end of the session.

Mark, I think honestly saying these apps should be shut down is really paranoid. Shut down all existing social media apps. New ones will come up. The internet and computing is what it is. It can be used for bad or good.

I have no issues with social media to that level. I block what I want to block, expose what I want to expose and honestly I am not that torn up.

What I am more upset about is the modern media landscape where standalone websites and blogs have no viability. That is the reason social media is so central to the Internet nowadays; it all works only for the big players. 10 and even 20 years ago smaller players could have a humble existence.
