I had a nice show planned for tonight, but then my hard drive went belly up, so I'm improvising an all-vinyl show tonight. Which is for the best I think – what's better than all vinyl, little to no planning? i dug out a bunch of latin records, surf, exotica, jazz... let's see what happens

Digging this Lateef! (And then thought...wait, do I have this filed? And apparently - yes! Procured from area used book store ca. 2007 according to price sticker. Gonna have to spin again over the weekend...) Hi Flash, everyone.
Avatar 7:13pm
Flash Strap:

even more than my preference for the way vinyl sounds – a difference which is real and good, tho not always "better" per se – is the way vinyl transforms music (ephemeral) into a discreet object that is more than an object or commodity; it becomes an artifact, with aura and history and tactility, and I rhapsodize and adore to be in possession and in interaction with each LP I have. the true vinyl difference in my humble opinion
Avatar 7:14pm
Flash Strap:

Hi Geezerette! Hi JtotheK! So glad to have you with us tonight

Avatar 7:20pm

haha i will strenuously stipulate that I do not and will not assert vinyl's supremacy – only that it has unique attributes that I find significant. fuck tha audiophile didactic
Avatar 7:23pm

But I don’t agree about vinyl vs something else as far as artifact. I get that with CDs, too. Etc, etc.

Flash @7:13pm - over the years I've come to enjoy the interaction with LPs/45s but lately especially enjoy the thought that goes into pruning. My collection/interests have changed the past 15+ years (I was incredibly intimidated by the 45 world up until a few years ago). 3-4 times a year I'll go through my LP collection and what hasn't been listened to in a while I debate in my head trading in to area stores. I'm glad you spun the Lateef record, as it's a reminder to keep that hard filed!

Good on you for improvising, Evan! I once showed at a gig straight after work and we couldn't get the turntables to work. I just bought a laptop, and only had my music uploaded to it w/ no mixing software. So, I ended up tandeming YouTube videos and my mp3s all night. (I still brought two flight cases to work and to the club and back home for nothing.)

Avatar 9:14pm

Like with a laser powered turntable? No stylus damage. We could have done this by now.
Avatar 9:16pm
Flash Strap:

there's this thing they do with a weird science liquid that coats the grooves and smooths them out that the Luaka Bop guys were telling me about once. that sounded pretty good, not sure what it was made of though
Avatar 9:16pm
TDK60:

scientific expertise misplaced Anthony-- convertible cars to the Sun y'know.

pastureized:

I like the vinyl warble though! Sort of adds to each record's character as an individual artifact imo
Is this show typically all-digital?
Avatar 9:21pm
Anthony!:

It’s just a missed opportunity. If BSR had invented a laser turntable they would still be in business. I don’t mind the warble, I don’t like the distortion at the end of a side. Drove me crazy. Especially on Pink Floyd and yes records.
Avatar 9:21pm
Flash Strap:

it's usually a healthy mix. Hi Pasteurized!
  9:22pm

Can't say I've experienced a lot of IGD, though I know all kinds of distortion. I suspect the issue is mostly one related to equipment quality: good turntables well-tended will mitigate the problem.

I recall, c.1985, visiting my favorite stereo equipment store, where they first played my copy of Sequentia's first "Ordo Virtutum" (3 LPs) pre-cleaning, then ran a disk through the Keith Monk machine. They played it again. Stunning improvement!

Yep! That "Turkish Dance" 45 is my very favorite Pandit recording
Avatar 9:40pm

Anthony, not at all, I dig Yes, not all of it. I understand why some may not like 'em (psych cheesiness?) but.. "Relayer" = my fave. "Close to the Edge" is really trippy; interrupting *that* for a dust-off may have sent people over the edge. So I like Yes, but don't tell any smirky post-punkers tho, I'm tryin' to keep clear of the Prog Police.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:41pm

Once heard an A/B of A) Close to the Edge, first pressing, so-so quality, and B) Mobile Fidelity remaster of the album. Both had their high points, but the beat-up early disk was really vibrant.

Fave Yes album: Tales. Close to the Edge comes next, then the earlier stuff. Relayer was a bit of a let-down.

Coel; that's a good-in too, their most rockin'! Chris Squire was a great bassist.

...which brings to mind Yessongs, one helluvan amazing live album that doesn't quite get the respect it deserves.

I'm gettin' nervous now, the 3 or 4 of us admitting in public our Yes affinities, we may have to scram soon....keep an eye out....

i've *liked* the fall from the beginning, then got really tired of the lack of evolution; but after M E.S died i heard (on these here airwaves) some fall stuff i'd never heard that blew my mind.

Flash, I don’t listen to the stream often, but this is a good show so I will tune in from now on. I gave you a try because the guy on the main stream played my dads music.

Anthony -fragile may be overrated because it had the breakthrough hit on it, but (despite the lack of continuity) it does have some spectacular songs...roundabout being one of them.

Jon and Vangelis (released as Vangelis in '75) was among the first LPs I purchased at the venerable Moby Disc in Van Nuys. Good, but no way was their partnership better than Yes's finest, mentioned by many above.
