Technically, I learnd of WFMU from The Wire, and finally in '98, when everyone had left the office (when I was still an undergrad), I found Donna's Gateway to Joy on the tinny stream (since my office had better bandwidth then I did at home.
there's so much to love about "chicken pot pie", but maybe the bit i love best is that they get as far as telling you to mix up the peas and carrots with wine, and at that point just abandon reciting the recipe altogether.
Found this cd ages ago...Ain't I'm A Dog ! Warning! Contains actual rockabilly...a Devil spawned musical hybrid known to anger parents and induce juvenile delinquency. listen at your own risk !
Les Blank story: in 1979, Les spent a week at the University of Kansas showing his films nightly at the student union movie theater, which were very well attended. Posters around campus advertised his films. But strangely the film to be shown on Saturday night was as billed as starring "a famous rock star", but didn't say WHICH rock star! On Saturday afternoon, Les showed a few of his films at the Topeka public library, again to a very good (and older) crowd. During the Q&A period I asked him why the "famous rock star" was not mentioned by name on his posters, suggesting that more people might come to the film showing if they knew his/her name. He didn't want to answer, but finally sighed and relented, claiming this "famous rock star" financed the editing and duplicating of his films in return for making a film about said rock star and his band. At this point Les was trembling and his voice quivered, saying that the rock star and his band treated him horribly throughout the filming and that nothing like that had ever happened to him before, but his agreement required him to finish the film. But, he said, he was under no obligation to further Mr. Rock Star and his career so he made sure to purposely leave Leon Russell's name off of the posters and press releases.
