"I listened yesterday. It's no reflection on you but I could'nt see where you were going or what you were going for. This early seventies thing did'nt get noticed the first time and you talk about friends of like Dealney and Bonnie who had records out like we're supposed to remember who they are. Then you play this long winded free jazz stuff that really grates on my nerves. And that noise without a beat and sounds like someones being pinched. Then you play a reggae song, I think you called it Dub, to what, be cool? You seem to really fetishize the whole folk thing too which is obnoxious to us who don't even care. I liked it when you played that punk song though. I like Joe Belock a lot." (Visit homepage.)

i genuinely don't get people who comment complaining about weirdness. a) we are known for weirdness, there are plenty of more anodyne stations you could try and b) as others have mentioned, we have thousands of hours of archived radio and if you don't like what's currently playing you can find just about ANY style of music being given a spotlight somewhere in the archives.

john cage used to take a crack at making actual Random Noise using the i ching as a sort of randomizer. in my experimental music class at cornell we got into an argument over whether experimental music is by definition made at random in that way (i was arguing against that definition...)

@Bronwyn-yeah! And I am REALLY looking forward to that 3 hour Blues Traveler show you promised me un-ironically! It would ROCK.
I think the music right on the edge of what I like is what intrigues me about WFMU. I forget about the stuff I DON"T like. It is simply not relevant to me. That is how I have grown to accept WFMU, as it IS not as I WISH IT TO BE. It is far more interesting this way in that I get to hear stuff I never knew I would love!
Avatar 11:04am
KenW:

Beautifully said Wild Neil. I remember when you first logged onto Bryce's show, you were honestly trying to navigate some extra trippy weird stuff, and like all of us who have become hooked to FMU, it's the music we never thought we'd hear, then love, that always keeps us growing.

fmu is the reason for my love for and knowledge of a great variety of odd and interesting music. i discovered it as a 17-year-old who only listened to indie rock, classical music, and showtunes. it retrained my ears and taught me to love the fringes and the abyss.
  11:06am
Stepchild:

I hoped my comment wouldn’t be misread as an insistence that I am some arbiter of what is and isn’t random. The linked page contains no reference to music, but a fair reading of it will surely hint at the difficulty of being random.
Avatar 11:11am
KenW:

Exactly my story Bronwyn! That's also what no other station can offer, a unique collection of brilliant minds programing music that always challenges me to explore what I never thought was possible. Your comment "retrained my ears and taught me love the fringes and the abyss', is absolutely the PERFECT way to describe this station!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:13am
ɨkɛ:

I listened yesterday. It's no reflection on you but as the official arbiter of what's good and what isn't, I declare you officially guilty of violations of the random noise penal code. Your penalty is death, or payment of 350,000 square Japanese watermelons in full at the Musical Snob County Courthouse. Also, this early 70s thing didn't get noticed the first time and you talk about friends of like Delaney and Bonnie who had records out like we're supposed to remember who they are, which is a violation of the random nostalgia penal code, section 69:6969, for which the penalty is lots of 69ing. Then you play this long-winded free jazz stuff that really grates on my nerves which is a violation of the Albert Ayler code. I liked it when you played that punk song though, although that was a violation of the Pat Duncan penal code. I like Joe Belock a lot.

One of the long-time volunteers interviewed by Kim and Emily last year said that when the main stream was unlistenable he just switched to the Ichiban stream. I thought it was funny and probably reflects the feelings of many FMU fans, that unlistenability happens and is not a deal-breaker.

i have ocd and am essentially compelled to keep listening even when its something i don't necessarily enjoy listening to because my brain doesn't really allow me to make preference-based decisions like turning something off because i don't like it (this is probably really hard for people without OCD to understand but its just the way it is for me). the only time i ever switch from fmu to a different audio source is when its a talk show or interview because my ocd-induced misophonia relating to hearing multiple people talk when im trying to focus on something overrides my inability to turn something off because i don't like it.

coelacanth∅:

this is interesting,Bronwyn -and difficult to understand! i have too much & too many other sources of music whining for me to listen to them for me to keep the radio on when i'm not into it. there are shows, though, that i like as much for the dj as for the music, and will stay on through stuff i don't like because i know most likely it's just the one set i'm not digging.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:27am
steveo:

Bronwyn, I identified with your "retrained my ears" comment. I think that's what I meant by "keep listening". I'm sure I have some OCD, too, but I never thought about it in this context.
  11:27am
Stepchild:

In something is unlistenable for a minute, try it for two. If still unlistenable try four. Then eight, 16, and so on. Soon you will find it is not unlistenable at all, but very interesting. [apologies]
