I thought I was the only one who listened to this song! (Peace of Mind, Blue Cheer.) Randy Holden is an under rated guitarist.
  3:23pm
Dean:

It's playing with shades of meaning of "failure" and of "of." Failure can be taken as implicating a moral tone, as in a want of success. But it also signifies the mere absence of something, as in "X failed to occur." As always, the genitive is ambiguous. Which way does it point? Does "the failure of noise" mean noise fails to accomplish something? Or does it mean there is a kind of failure inherent in noise?

There's also more than a whiff of ironic appropriation of marketing jargon ("Strength Through [Our Product]!" and, no doubt, the National Socialist Kraft durch Freude.

@Rev. You can also hear the whole bop bop mm bop bop mm bop bop song just before giant man. A year or two ago the dj before Fabio (not Diane) played Mr. Giant Man early because he was not getting enough pledges (he felt). My first thought was that I had somehow forgotten to pick up my children from school. (That dropout was art, right?)

Who plays lead guitar on Hurdy Gurdy Man? I always thought it was Jimmy Page, but apparently not, (P.S. I posted the comment about Blue Cheer)
Avatar 👻 3:32pm
Rev. Turnip Druid:

@steveo: indeed, that's the other anticipation: hearing the track before in its entirety. Also, the cover art (for the original release) is classic 1970s nuts. It may go on the wall as a tribute to Strength Thru Failure..

My pleasure, LL. I think I was poised to reply because your question has often been in the back of my mind during this show.

Rich in WA: That album is one of the casualties of a mid-'80s LP purge, but I have since purchased later issues of live sets by Hillage that feature the tune. I saw him, too, around that time. He opened for ELO, I kid you not, at Anaheim Convention Center. Or maybe it was Long Beach, in which case Little Feat opened at Anaheim. Or vice versa. Anyway, I was most excited to hear Hillage live.

BHS shows in the mid-80s were mindblowing. Nothing else like it. Maybe Caroliner Hernia Rainbow, whom I regrettably never saw, but can imagine.
Every time I saw the Buttholes in the 80s, it seemed like Smegma opened for them. I know for a fact at least twice, as Ju Suk Reet Meat told me that's how many he can remember.

I think you had to see the Surfers in their prime to really get it. Those records haven't held up too well IMO

At least you had a sensible excuse, Rich in WA. I hadn't yet started buying CDs, and I was tired of rock, so I unloaded some really interesting, now fairly scarce stuff, e.g., "Ys" by Il Balletto di Bronzo.

I don't recall the Vegas crowd being rude to Donovan that night, brainiac. Maybe most of us were, like me, just old enough to recognize his importance. But then the same should go for a Chicago crowd, I guess. Anyway, among my memories of the evening not related to the show itself, a buddy of mine rode the elevator at the hotel where the show took place with Rick Wakeman, and before the show my friends and I ran through the slot machines at the old MGM Grand (which burnt down four years later). @melinda: I went to court yesterday as a defendant for the first time in my life, for my bumper kissing the bumper of the car in front of me leaving nary a scratch. The lady insisted on calling the popo and waiting past the 30 day statute of limitations to make an injury claim (when she was on the phone walking about to look at my plate). Anyhosers, I hadn't slept much in the last week, but in court, after waiting an hour for my case, the officer purposely fell on his sword, and took a verbal mauling from the judge for not asking for a subpoena of the claimant. (I thanked him). So, I've been sleep deprived (hadn't been sleeping the last week), and felt like a need to reward myself(the dram) (going to a noise/avant/DIY/performance art/???? show tonight).

@melinda: Irish whiskey does go well w/ tea. I wouldn't mix scotch w/ tea, I couldn't adulterate good scotch!

@ northguineahills: No, I believe it is someone named Sybren Renema, who is listed as a featured performer on the track.

Dean:

With a name like Renema, that vocalist should have performed with Donovan on "Intergalactic Laxative."

There. I've fulfilled my scatology quota for the day.

In addition to meaning what you think it means, namely, "that Fleetwood Mac record that sold a trillion copies," it also means "murmur."

John Paul Jones, 2005: "I would like to confirm that the musicians on the record were as follows: Donovan, Accoustic Guitar; John Paul Jones, Arrangement/Musical Director and Bass Guitar; Alan Parker, Lead (electric) Guitar; Clem Cattini, Drums. No other musicians were involved in this session."
