Favoriting January 1, 2018: Best practices for tech in 2018 - with Mark & station manager Ken

Listen to this show: Pop-up listen Pop-up player!

This week, Mark and station manager Ken Freedman talk about best practices in tech for 2018. Speaking of getting prepared, here's a comic to start off 2018.

As for the above photo of Mark Zuckerberg, Chris Olson wrote this on June 21, 2016:

• Camera covered with tape
• Mic jack covered with tape
• Email client is Thunderbird

Thanks to Mark Zuckerberg for showing us good security tips to guard against surveillance capitalism!

From last week's special holiday episode:

Here's the list of games I recommended (re listener Lawrence's request).
Sony PS4: Rocket League, Overwatch, Nier:Automata
Nintendo Switch: Super Mario Odyssey, Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
XBox One: Cuphead
Pretty much any platform: Spelunky, Minecraft, Roblox

Also, during last week's episode I read the AI-inspired fake Harry Potter chapter by Botnik.org, but here's a better-sounding reading (thanks to Webhamster Henry).

My tech reading in 2017:

I got through 12 tech-related books in my reading in 2017, to help prep for Techtonic (and two Skeptech events) - including Uproot, an excellent book by next week's guest (and former WFMU DJ) Jace Clayton, aka dj /rupture. Shown below, in no particular order:

I tried playing “Animal Crossing: Pocket Campsite” for a day or two. Some good aspects and cute world, but the underlying message is you—as the player—need to get stressed out running errands for animals who won’t be your friends unless you do things for them. Ugh!!!

@Ken: Have only seen one ep, Fifteen Million Merits, from the 1st season. Def. want to see more but boy, that one snagged in my flesh. (First learned of it when Scott played the version of the Irma Thomas tune in the episode.) Always impressed when a piece of media can affect me like that for so long.

I don’t understand “smart” home devices like thermostats. What actual benefit does someone get other than ability to remotely control stuff like that?

Solutions require problems, and all of these “smart” devices are solutions to non-existent problems.

But what's really bad is there are no standards for password content: some sites demand that your password conform to their idea of password diversity, others are loose, and then there are many which limit the number of characters you can use, which is in fact the best way to make a secure password.
