Live performance and chat with Philip Lewin

In 1975, Philip Lewin released a charming homebrew of an album, all of 300 copies worth. "Am I Really Here All Alone?" was barely noticed outside of Toronto where it was created. In time, Lewin's album was sought after by collectors, fetching a premium price for this collection of melancholic folk with a mildly psychedelic tone. Tompkins Square rescued Philip's album from obscurity, and he's been touring in support of the re-release. Philip Lewin stopped by to play a few tunes for WFMU.

Good Evening, Irene & All! Wonderful start!

Irene Trudel:

Jeff, you know it. I desperately need some stress relief after today's work day! Philip Lewin's set will get us further there. Folsom, glad you saw Obit! I thought it was quite good, although Peter makes light of his contribution. And 'hi' to you, mr_mike, melinda and Number Six!

I can't believe you're playing "The Dutchman"-- my father played on this album! Thanks, Irene!

Irene Trudel:

Really, David?! One of my favorites, this song especially. Who is your dad?
  9:19pm
David in Maine:

Jeff Gutcheon. Played with Goodie for years (also with Willie Nelson, etc., etc.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:21pm
Irene Trudel:

That's really cool, David! Please tell your dad I'm a fan of his contribution to Steve's work.
  9:23pm
David in Maine:

Hey, remember that weird album cover that was on the wall of the station break room for years-- "Hungry Chuck"? Black-and-white cover, picture of an empty suit and a pair of shoes in an armoire? That was his band on Bearsville. He passed in 2013 but I'll tell him anyhow ;)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:25pm
Tommy in Neversink:

Arlo didn't initially didn't want to record this Steve Goodman song and it ended up being his biggest hit.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:25pm
melinda:

Interesting, Tommy. Such a great song.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:26pm
Tommy in Neversink:

Yes, I think Arlo want to go more in a rock direction at that point in career
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:27pm
Tommy in Neversink:

This song hits too close to home..hard to listen to
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:28pm
Irene Trudel:

Aw, sorry to hear David. But we all talk to our dead dads from time to time. Tommy, I did know that about Arlo. Strange how things work out.

Wow, that ode to Pres* Trump came outa nowhere. Which is right where he belongs.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:34pm
Tommy in Neversink:

I hope that's the last time I hear the Orange one's name mentioned on this show. I come here to get away from him
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:39pm
Irene Trudel:

It's a deal, Tommy. I'm not much of one for political commentary anyway. Loudon just struck the right note with me on that one.

Interesting stuff about the tape bleed ghost sounds

Jeff:

Is pre-echo the one you get when you store a tape head-out?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:54pm
Irene Trudel:

That's right, Jeff. That's why it's best to store a reel to reel tape tail's out. Joys of analog, indeed!

Hey, good to see/hear science fiction people on Irene's show! Bet we could put together a great folk/rock group from the sf community. David Hartwell's son Geoff has jammed with Sonny Landreth, for example.
