This is where all of culture and all of time are collapsed into one seductive portal and viewed through the panoramic lens of the exotic. Come and embark on an armchair-travel virtual-voyage to the heart of timeless darkness and beyond; embrace the numinous monolith of the exotic immensity. Let us find that place where hybridization meets its destiny as pure fantasy. Let us become observers observing those others who are ourselves. You wear your mask and I'll wear mine.

Hello Melinda! Hello Doc! Some of my scratchiest vinyl tonight
Avatar 7:04pm

Geezerette! seriously, the jelly beans are confounding, right where a drink should be

Must be the newest diet.

I have of course helpfully changed all the record covers (from various Stanley Black releases) to some of the records we'll be hearing from shortly. Long pulls tonight, some whole sides... luxuriating is the word I hope you'll want to use

Well, this is the most stereotypically Bert Kaempfert Orchestra song I've heard!
Avatar 7:17pm

Hi Hyde! Me too... though I do wonder how much Prez is even on it. They used to just put all kinds of mambos out under his name

Listener James! Ehd! Wonderful to see you all!

There's a track coming up on here called "Where Flamingos Fly" that is honestly one of my favorite song-title/sound synergies ever
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:20pm
doctorjazz:

This is the sappiest version of Dancing in the Dark, which is one of the sappiest songs EVER! Perfect combo...
Avatar 7:23pm
geezerette:

If one were sufficiently hammered, say martinis and a valium or two, this might sound romantic.
Until you pass out and start to snore.
Avatar 7:24pm
Flash Strap:

honestly I usually find Bert's stuff either totally inert or brutally insincere, but there's a playfulness and vitality on this record... the drummer is pretty fun to listen to, the bass has a good almost surf sound, there's a raunchiness in the horns
Avatar 7:26pm
Flash Strap:

love to imagine flamingos to this song
Avatar 7:27pm
geezerette:

Absolutely! Pretty languid flamingos.
Avatar 7:27pm

somehow more accurate in its evocation than the exotica standard Flamingo

Tipsy tempo.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:47pm

This style of banjo reminds me of Shakey's Pizza
Avatar 7:47pm
Flash Strap:

this always reminds me of sneaking around the danvers asylum, trying to avoid the security guard without turning off the music, crawling around trying to get in those old tunnels, this demented music just making it all seem so absurd
Avatar 7:49pm
Flash Strap:

was Shakey's sort of like a Chucky Cheese?
Avatar 7:50pm
Flash Strap:

haha when this record takes things up a notch, it really hits ya
Avatar 7:53pm
Flash Strap:

ok one more and then we hear some "sleepwalk" guitars

So Dan&Dale were famously Sun Ra's guys and Al Kooper's guys sessioning, at least circa the Batman stuff, but is that true for all Dan&Dale releases? Are there any Arkestra people on this?

Well, it works for our cover girl!

Doug, did you bring the hula hoops?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:02pm

I remember Shakey's as having a good-time vibe, but I don't think it was designed specifically for kids. Wiki says that Shakey was responsible for a jazz revival in Sacramento: en.wikipedia.org...

@Flash: agreed re: "Tabu" read
Avatar 8:41pm
Flash Strap:

Don't really think much or any of this is Prez, but I could be wrong... that "And Others" is doing a deceptive amount of work here
Avatar 8:42pm
Flash Strap:

it's great either way! I love all those suspect Prez records just as much and sometimes more than his bonafide releases
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:46pm
Little Danny:

You may have mentioned this, but I always figured these were some of Prado's early recordings from Mexico City
Avatar 8:47pm
still b/p:

I like how some of the horns and other instruments in the room sound more distant from the mike.
Avatar 8:48pm
Flash Strap:

ah, that's very possible too! I have a few LPs that try to bundle one or two Prez tracks in with a bunch by other artists and put his name on the front, so I always get suspicious, but this does sound like it could be his early stuff
