Mostly clear skies in northern NJ, so I headed out with my colander at the appointed moment. A cloud passed over it briefly at its max so I snapped a pretty good pic of it. Will have to do until, what, 2024, but still better than the 100% overcast weather we had for the '79 one!

I should see NRBQ live then. I too have mixed feelings about them.

They did a great stint as the "house band" of The Simpsons in the late 90s with some original songs ("Mayonnaise and Marmalade", anyone?). And I feel they were on other shows like "Eek! The Cat" as well. But on the one hand NRBQ seem clever and Zappa-like, on the other they seem unfocused and all over the place. But I'd like to see them play and find out what they're about.

The Dragon swallowing the Moon is prob a Chinese/East Asian myth of the eclipse, while in India two halves of a split serpent are responsible. Rahu and Ketu are considered "shadow planets" along with the other 7 classical planets Sun, Moon and Mercury through Saturn.

Their Navagraha astrology is pretty interesting, they have a whole set of myths apparently created to explain the sometimes unusual astronomical observations.

The welding mask thing is dangerous - while welding masks are indeed designed to dim glare and block the invisible wavelengths which can also cause eye damage, apparently most welding masks of a practical darkness for welding aren't dark enough for sun viewing. NASA's site says only "Shade 12" or darker welding masks are likely to be safe - and that probably the fairly rare Shade 13 would be optimal.

Because you don’t go to the bathroom enough the sun has to hide itself. The whole solar system knows this!

If you don’t eat your pierogis the moon has to hide away in shame that you leave food behind like that.

@Jake: There's starvation and suffering in the world! And you won't even finish your pierogis?!? And it's not like this is garbage, is it? This is your bubbe's pierogi recipe, this is wonderful food! You know what your bubbe ate for dinner when they first came to America? Half an egg! Try to leave any of THAT behind!
