Red Baraat: Brooklyn's Masters of Dhol 'n' Brass

Hear this show now: Pop-up listen Pop-up player! | Add or read comments

NPR calls them "the best party band in years" - but they're not just any old party band: Red Baraat's exuberant brass-driven explorations blend north Indian roots and bhangra with New Orleans second line, funk, soul, jazz and more.

The band kicked off a summer tour at Brooklyn Bowl in Williamsburg Thursday night (June 29th), celebrating its latest greatest album, Bhangra Pirates. And then on to WFMU! (Actually it's on to Ann Arbor, Michigan too, where Red Baraat is playing the same day as their FMU session, Saturday July 1. (How is that possible? Chalk one up to the magic of radio!) The band also has more tour dates in the midwest starting July 15th.

Learn more about Red Baraat, tour dates, get their albums and more at http://www.redbaraat.com.

Meet visionary Red Baraat leader, drummer and percussion wiz Sunny Jain and find out about his arresting trio Tongues in Trees (who perform as part of the Brooklyn Raga Massive weekly at the Owl Music Parlor, 497 Rogers Ave in Brooklyn Wed July 12th) and his other musical adventures in global musics, jazz improv, experimental music and more at http://www.sunnyjain.com/

Sunny also has a booking agency, Jain Sounds, that can hook you up with amazing bands and artists working a wide range of South Asian inspired musical angles: http://www.jainsounds.com

Massive thanks to Red Baraat's radio promo folks at Planetary Group, the band and Sunny's management at Lobel Arts, and Red Baraat's label Rhyme-Reason for helping make this happen, and of course to our illustrious engineers Manny Yupa and Jake Brown!

This week’s show is pre-recorded in its entirety (that’s why the playlist is not updating live). Special thanks to our Board Op, Bridget Murray.

Listener comments!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:45am Rob W:

Good evening everyone and thanks for listening! Please note: Rather unusually, this show is pre-recorded in its entirety. (Huge thanks to Bridget Murray for acting as our board-op tonight!) That's why the whole playlist is already posted and I may not be posting in the comments section during the show. But this does mean you know the future! At least, the future as far as what the next few songs are that you'll be hearing on WFMU, and Red Baraat's set list for their live session tonight. Which I can tell you is fantastic, it was a treat to record the session with them and I hope you can stick around for it. Thanks again for listening and have a great rest-of-the-weekend!

Zats, if I knew the future, I'd know if I'd dare bet against Germany over Chile in the Federations Cup final tomorrow!
  7:35pm Mayor Frank:

Chile. Why? Because I have no allegiance. I want the underdog. I have a long-sleeved Giggs shirt but don't wear it. Thus, Chile. Though why has Germany collapsed so? Once so skillful. Old? Thank you.
Avatar 7:42pm Mayor Frank:

Portugal v. Mexico at 8:30m as well. #coffeeball
Avatar 7:42pm BriJet:

man! my neighborhood will be rockin tonight, esp. if Portugal wins!

I don't like the non-live aspect but that's OK. Isn't it weird how it's weird?

Actually sent their B team of mostly youngsters for the tournament, and have pretty much dominated. Probably won't dominate Ch-Chi-Chi, Le-Le-Le,.
