...I'm going to become informed of another notable talent through their obituary tribute I see. [Big sigh.]
I didn't even know Coryell really as more than a name revered amongst guitarists. Irene Trudell helped remedy that w/ a beautiful tribute Tues. Makes an interesting comparison/contrast to McLaughlin. Also stunning technique but straighter to the feeling, w/ broad inspirations across genres?

You can tell Rick Danko by the warble in his voice. Levon always sounded like Levon. Richie Manuel's voice always sounded like a perfect slide guitar riff.

Voices in the same band that sound quite similar - it's a Thing. TheBeatles certainly used it. Makes for great blends - like doubling the same voice - & interesting dynamics in the mind (who dat?). Like a Spector-BrianWilson mixing effect...

@Stuart: They were all emulating the Everlys - just no way to beat the Kentucky brothers for two-part harmony. Irwin & a guest pointed out that Brian Wilson & brothers had a background in studying the Four Freshman's arrangements & such that TheBeatles just didn't have. The bYRdS themselves have pointed out that - you think they're doing three parts - but was usually Roger & Gene doubling the same part & Crosby using his natural gift to do really creative (& beautiful & impressive) harmonies on top.

Thanks, Rev. That really clarifies things for me. Roger and Gene doubling the same part- yeah, that's what would fool my ears. (Where did Roger go? He was just there a second ago.)
With the last incarnation of the Byrds- the Albert Hall live set, for instance- there wasn't that kind of matching.
I did know about the Brian Wilson's love of the Four Freshmen. Damn lucky that Brian had all those voices at hand to take a stab at emulating that harmony sound.

@Stuart: Probably a *lot* of recordings people doubling their own vocals we don't even think about it - & that's the Analog era...They say TheBeatles getting ADT - artificial electronic doubling by slightly altering the signal & making two out of it - eased Lennon's limited patience starting around 'Revolver'...
