Favoriting February 9, 2017: I Believe in Little Things: Joe Raposo

Composer, arranger, conductor and multi-instrumental whiz JOE RAPOSO would have been 80 this week. Known primarily for his indefatigable work as the music director of Sesame Street, for which he wrote and arranged dozens of tunes, Raposo was also a well-respected talent for film, stage, and other TV projects. His songs were recorded by a variety of pop superstars during the '70s. His own arrangements are immediately recognizable: complex, "busy" pieces that incorporate techniques from big band to funk to vaudeville. Through these beautiful songs, many of them under a minute long, he informed the musical tastes of a generation of young people around the world.

Glad to hear you all are enjoying the show so far! I might not be super active on the playlist today because these songs are very short and I wanna pay attention... but I will try to chit chat about 'em as much as I can!

Just a few weeks ago I was with my dad and he was reminiscing about how much he liked Sesame Street! He was 30 when it debuted. He knows all the words to "I Don't Wanna Live on the Moon."

Hi Gaylord! One of my all-time fav's too, which is why I front-loaded it.

I feel like Oscar and Johnny would get on as drinking buddies.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:45am
listener james from westwood:

Old-school Mac users, raise your hand if you had the app that made Oscar emerge and wave and sing this song's title when you emptied the Trashcan.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:45am
Gaylord Fields:

Amanda, I'll just have to jump in the time machine and hear it in context.

Also, I've always appreciated how much the Three's Company theme sounds like a Sesame Street song (even down to having a number in it), just with a grown-up message. The lyrics are just as elementary, as well.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:46am
listener james from westwood:

RUSTY TROMBONE, LOL.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:48am
Amanda:

Ha! Three's Company, brought to you by the number 3.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:50am

If they both sing at the same time this will be totes the opening of "Man of La Mancha."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52am

@Amanda: And the letter F.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:56am
melinda:

@Gaylord: Somebody Come and Play might be my favorite too.
@James: I laughed at that too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:57am

A seamless jump from Vaudeville to Broadway!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:01am
Gaylord Fields:

@melinda: And mind you that I was well out of the Sesame Street age demographic when that song debuted circa 1969-70. Didn't stop me.

Miss Mailas:

Hi, Amanda! Hi, Gaylord! Hi, all! I must say, hearing "I Don't Want to Live on the Moon" flashed me back to first seeing Ernie sing it on television when I was a wee lass - and, more specifically, how I cried because I felt such empathy for Ernie and the idea of him living on the moon, away from everyone he loved. Such big feelings for a little girl! Anyway, thank you for that memory.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:07am
listener james from westwood:

Had no idea this was his!! ::completely Furleys out::
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:08am
Gaylord Fields:

Hi, Miss Mailas! Empathy is a wonderful trait for a wee lass to possess.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:13am
Amanda:

I had the same reaction to Ernie's plight when I listened to it a couple of days ago!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:15am
Gaylord Fields:

Pretty Baby is such a well-done 1920s pastiche, and I forgot it existed until now. Thanks, Amanda, for jogging my memory! (And the reason I'm so Sesame savvy — even though I was too old for the program — is younger siblings and one TV.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:17am
Amanda:

Ya, I love that one too. Funny--I had the same syndrome, my middle sister is 9 years younger than me. But "Pretty Baby" is one that I remember from my OWN babyhood, as by 1990ish they had stopped running it.
  11:19am

Some of my favorite Sesame Street music is from don't eat the pictures, but I don't think Raposo wrote those. I always sing the theme when I'm in the Met!!

@Amanda @sugarwolf: But no argument abut the "spoiled" assessment, right?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:40am

There were three Gordons during the series' run, none called Gordon IRL.
