Live performance and chat with Ala.Ni, accompanied on guitar by Marvin Dolly

Channeling a little Julie London and Mary Ford, with a bit of Billie Holiday, Ala.Ni recently stepped out from a career of background vocals to taking charge of a solo career. British singer-songwriter Ala.Ni's dreamy style would fit nicely in an earlier era of torchy performers. Ala.Ni just released her debut album, "You & I'" and sang some of the songs live on Irene's show.

It is fair to say that on many, many of those old TV shows, the "live" acts were just lip-synching and air-playing. At least the modern contest shows feature actual talent. It'd be nice if they had good songs and stuff... Sigh. Viva WFMU!
