Avatar 11:03am
Bronwyn Bishop:

@fred: yes, because people sometimes get excited when they're introduced to me and then I have to disappoint them ;) Also I've never been one of two Bronwyns and had to add my last initial to my name before.
  11:05am
Dean:

I went to law school with a Bronwyn. Really like that name.
  11:10am
Dean:

There's a story in the local "paper" (might be exclusively online) about how Kristofferson wrote "Me and Bobby McGee." Good story, interesting photos of Janis, but then it ends with this sentence: "At 80 years old he is one of the last-living vestiges of a time and place when songwriting actually mattered." Huh?
Avatar 11:14am
Bronwyn Bishop:

Damn, Dean, what a myopic blanket statement from that writer.

Back from dog walk, kinda chilly, show's been good company.
Loving this set; one thing I noticed, could be me, I thought the Son House sounded like one of those rechanneled for stereo things-was using phone and headphones, Son was in my left channel (didn't happen with Little Willie John or Lizzie Miles), No big deal, just noticed (like it better when they leave the mono alone).
@UM 10:49-I'm a big Fountains of Wayne fan, really liked that Tinted Windows track, would go for a second outing (going to get the first first). Though, I'd say it was more Blink 182/All Time Low than FOW.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:20am
Ken From Hyde Park:

@Bronwyn - The latest Blast of Hot Air from Ken mentioned that your choral group performs at Carnagie Hall. Did that already happen or is it coming up? If happened, how did it go? It must be very exciting. When do you open the phone lines for us to win tickets?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:23am
Uncle Michael:

Who wrote that stinker of an erroneous observation, Dean?
Avatar 11:25am
Bronwyn Bishop:

The Carnegie Hall show is on Feb. 6th but it'll be my second time performing there, the first was back in October when we performed several opera pieces at the Tucker Gala, which you can watch here: www.medici.tv...

The two best songs that we did are at the beginning and end of that video. If you end up watching it, I am the young woman in the choir with dark bangs haha.

Carnegie Hall is amazing of course. It was really surreal actually singing there because I had just seen the movie Florence Foster Jenkins, in which the main character dreams of singing there one day and finally does at the end, and then two months after seeing the movie there I was. The view from the stage is very beautiful and kind of intimidating!

And I actually have to sell six tickets or else the choir makes me buy all six myself (yikes!) so if anyone's interested, let me know and you can order tickets through me for $30. It's going to be a really incredible night of music! One of our pieces (the Durufle Requiem) is amazing and worth the price of admission.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:25am

My daughter's orchestra played Carnegie Hall two summers ago. Pretty massively cool.
  11:28am

OTOH, the story prompted me to purchase some Janis records just now on the last day of Amoeba's monthly 15% off/free shipping sale.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:29am
Uncle Michael:

He's not local to you! He writes for the HOUSTON Chronicle. Why SF would pick that up, I can't imagine.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:30am
doctorjazz:

Amoeba? Haven't heard of that site/store. (probably better off...)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:31am
fred:

I'm sure someone once wrote how Kristofferson was nothing compared to the real songwriters
Avatar 11:31am
Bronwyn Bishop:

Amoeba is incredible and the only thing this New York girl likes about LA
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:31am
Uncle Michael:

Amoeba's kind of a big deal, Doc.
  11:31am
Dean:

SFGate is a highly adulterated version of the Chronicle, which hasn't yet gotten quite as tabloidy as its online sibling. There's a genuine online Chronicle, too, but it's paywalled.

Oh, dear, @doctorjazz. Oh, dear. The store is much more fun in person. I work very hard, and not always successfully, not to stroll there from work. It's just a few blocks southwest of my office.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:32am
Ken From Hyde Park:

Thanks, Bronwyn; very nice. Break a leg!
Avatar 11:32am
Bronwyn Bishop:

Thanks Ken! :)
  11:32am
Dean:

Aw, @BB, there's *much* more to like about LA. Ironically, I moved to the Bay Area, site of the first Amoeba, about a year before they opened the Hollywood store, which I've never seen. Word is, though, that it's the best of the three.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:33am
doctorjazz:

Sounds a West Coast kind of thing, this East Coaster hasn't been out to LA, amazingly enough. Will check out the site, though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:34am
Uncle Michael:

The Chronicle died for me when they showed Jon Carroll the door.
  11:35am
Dean:

There's a Berkeley back-story about the Amoeba store and a nearby competitor, Rasputin, the owner of which allegedly refuses to develop the vacant lot across the street from Amoeba. He prefers the eyesore. But then he recently opened a store across the street from Amoeba in the other direction. It now houses Rasputin's former basement full of LPs.
  11:38am
Doug Schulkind:

I've come thisclose to moving to the East Bay three different times. Spent many hours and dollars at Rasputin and Amoeba.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:40am
doctorjazz:

There's so little in good record/music stores left in the NY area these days, do most everything on line now. (not that I'm up for spending hours flipping through record racks any more). Princeton Record Exchange is still around, I believe, haven't been there in a while, though (was overpriced when I used to go).
  11:41am
Dean:

The new Rasputin-owned store, @Doug, is in the former Cody's bookstore space. I miss Cody's. Fortunately, Moe's survives. Also miss the old Poobah Records in Pasadena. What a treasure that was.

THE SKILLET LICKERS!!!
  11:45am
Dean:

Oh, yeah, Jon Carroll! I confess I'd totally forgotten about him. We used to read the paper Chronicle, but now we get this weird cousin, now generically dubbed East Bay Times. He retired, didn't he? Was he handed walking papers? Given the pink slip, so to speak?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:46am
doctorjazz:

Just noticed, the Son House was from a 1965 recording, explains the stereo...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:48am
Uncle Michael:

Dean, Jon is blogging and writing better than ever.
  11:49am
Dean:

Will investigate. Upon retiring he wrote this nugget, among others: "I came back to The Chronicle in 1982, and I stayed and I stayed. I made a little trouble in the beginning: I compared Nordstrom to a whorehouse. I meant it in a nice way; when Nordstrom first opened, the men’s department featured a guy at a piano and a gaggle of young saleswomen who would lead you to the back and ask what you wanted. Then you went into a small room and took off your clothes."
